ew York, July 3.—The security
dealings today were governed entirely
by the consideration that a market
which had been going down continu
ously for it week, with resulting loa
was entitled at least to some sort of a
rally. Evtn those who bellove that the
tendency Is still downward, and that
tho low price limits have by no means
been reached, were willing to admit
that this Idea wns well founded. Ac
cordingly, the morning's operatt
were given over chiefly to buying in
against contracts for the decline, add
ed to which purchases were made
freely by professional operators who
saw the opportunity of a small profit
on the long side. Under the buying
from these sources prices rallied very
sharply after a half hour or so of un
certainty at the opening. The stocks
which have been sold most heavily for
short account, such as Rending, Penn
sylvania, Union Paclflc, Copper,.Smel
ters nnd Colorado Fuel, were tho ones
which rebounded the swiftest. Tho
lower priced Issues and stocks whose
movement Is slower made only ;i frac
tional gain, while many of the manip
ulated pool specialties made no ro-
MponsH nt all. The utmost that could
be said of the day’s happenings wns
that they revealed u good undertone
In the market and a cessation of 1I-'
quldntlng sales without carrying much
conviction that the turn for the better
was anything more than temporary.
