New York, July 14.—"Joe” Letter,
the millionaire mine owner of Chicago,
waa sought today as a witness In the
Thaw case by the district attorney's
office. It was learned, as a result of
revelations made to Assistant District
Attorney Garvar by actresses he has
questioned.
According to the Information which
has come to the district attorney’s of
fice. It was said that Letter was want
ed to tell of certain Incidents which
occurred In New York, at which both
Harry K. Thaw and Evelyn Nesblt
Thaw were present.
A Little Dinner Dance.
This Information was concerned
chiefly with a little dinner dance, at
which Nina Farrington, the actress,
was tho guest of jtonor.. Bancroft Da
vie, a,,.well-known dub man, was also
he sensational Incident of which
'Joe” Letter la expected to tell Is to
the effect that Davis knocked Thaw
down during a quarrel over an alleged
attempt on the part of Thaw to cause
the dancing party to degenerate Into
one of those boisterous affairs for
which Thaw waa famous among his
friends.
Horsewhipped an Actress.
Another Important witness secured
by the district attorney's office Is Miss
Ethel -Thomas, also an actress, who
has testified, It Is said, to the fact that
Harry Thaw horsewhipped her at one
time out of mere exuberance of spirits.
Miss Thomas brought an action for
120,000 against Thaw for the alleged
horsewhipping, but although the suit
had been on record for four years It
had been kept so far down on the cat
endnr that It never had been brought
to trial. A singular coincidence Is that
Abraham T. Hummel le attorney of
record In this suit. He was the lawyer
who figured In the much-discussed af
fidavit .alleged to have been signed
by Evelyn Nesblt at the Instigation of
White.
‘‘He’e Crazy,” 8ald Jerome.

Something About Jerome.
William Travera Jerome haa an as
aortment of characteristics. He knows
what crimes are* Committed In New
York and how to catch the criminals.
He knows how to convict them, and he
not afraid to do It. He la a forceful
and ready speaker nnd can amoke more
cigarettes than any man In the me
tropolis. He haa a 'Splendid home In
Lakewood, near New York, and he lives
In the eluma. He le .a member of ex
clusive clubs and ha does hla own

Garvan la a worker. He has led Ihe

Harry K. Thaw for the murder of
Btnnford White and has Interviewed
everybody who ever knew the Thaws,
tho former show girl or Ihe man who
met hie death in Madison BquareGanten.
It waa not known until Saturday that
Mr. Garvan would accompany Mr. Je
rome to the Bouth, nnd It Is probabla
that the two will elaborate their plana
In.the Thaw case before they return
to, New York.
Mr. Hntnmond went to New York
last January to present In person the
Invitation of the Georgia Bar Asso
ciation to Mr. Jerome to deliver the
principal address at the Warm Springs
meeting. .The district attorney was
ready to accept at once provided the
executive committee could poatpone Ihe
date for a abort time. Of course this
was done.
To be Quest of T. A. Hammond.
Mr. Hammond, who la 1 president of
the bar.asaoclatlon, haa not formed
definite plana for Ihe entertainment of
the visitors beyond n little dinner to
be given Bundny night. On Monday
they may be driven over Ihe city If
they Ilka and that afternoon they will
leave for Warm Spring*.
One Atlanta newspaper wrote to Mr.
R y of the address which he would
ver. The writer evidently did not
know Jerome, .who never writes
speech In advance, never plans an ad
dress until he la ready to make If, and
then goes ahead and talks eloquently
and forcibly. He resembles Theodore
Roosevelt In hla oratory. Hla speeches
have Ihe' aame sharp, fearless ring as
