New Orleans, July 16.—Cotton was com
paratively active today, and it displayed
u good undertone that carried prices up
for an advance of a half dollar a bale, iu
spite of the certainty of ronsldernble low-
grade Now York cotton being delivered on
contract here. Sentiment wns more bullish
than It was lust week, nnd shorts were dis
posed t<> cover nnd take tie* long side for n
turn. Heavy rains In sections of the east
ern belt—almost 6 inches In some localities
—wore chiefly responsible for this right-
aboti-face. Liverpool cables were about as
expected, but the weekly reviews concern
ing tie* trad* 1 <-"ndlf imis In the Manches
ter market were disappointing, ns they In
dicated a slackening nil around In the de
mand and in accumulation of stocks In the
principal distributing centers. Boon nfter

the steamship Proteus would arrive this

Our market, In addition to this turn
for the better abroad, was helped by
the gain of $4,600,000 with which tho
local banks started the week at the
sub-treasury and tho consequent easier
tendency in money rates and by the
lmpreslson which had sunk deep at the
close of the week that the stock market
was pretty well oversold.
Following the London quotations, the
stock market opened firm with tho gen
eral average of prlcOs V& to % abovo
Saturday’s Anal. Trading at the outset
fairly active. Reading was the
strongest stock, opening up a full point,
though it lost half the gain. After the
opening trading the market became
dull, though tho undertone held gener
ally firm..
After on early reaction In the trade
business became strong, and during tho
rest of the first hour prices advanced
sharply, with gains In active issues
ranging from 1 to 2 points. The news
of the engagement of £400,000 gold In
London for shipment to New York was
a signal for gen%rol buying al laro^und
the room and has ben the chief factor
in the trading so far today.
Arbitrage brokers have taken 20,000
shares for London account.
Governments unchanged. Other bonds
quiet.
