FORREST & GEORGE ADAIR.
PRINCESS TAMA-MAI.
By COUNT TOLSTOI.
(Copyright; 1906, by American-Joumal
Examiner.)
There existed In Japan, many yeara
ago, a young prlnceaa, ao blond and
handaome that ahe waa called Prlnceaa
Yama-Mal, which, in the language of
the Jppinese, meana the prlnceaa of the
golden hair.
The empress, who was Yama-Mal's
stepmother, hated the beautiful prin
cess Intensely, to such an extent that
she obtained from her husband the
powerful Mikado, an order of banish
ment against Yama-Mal, who waa ex
iled to a.aolttary country, far, very far
from the court.
The aoldlera who conducted her
thither received secret Instructions
from the Empress, and Yama-Mal was
taken to a distant desert, and left'there
to be devoured by the wild beasts.
But only live days had elapsed since
her departure when the charming
young princess returned to the palace
upon the back of a magnificent Hon.
Then the stepmother advised the Em
peror to send the princess to the sum
mit-of a very high mountain Inhabited
only by wild eagles and ferocious con
dors. But again this time the wretch
ed stepmother was fooled, for on the
fourth day Yama-Mal returned on the
wings of an Immense eagle.
The empress was very angry, but re
solved as she was to banish the prin
cess from Toklo, she exiled her to a
remote and deserted shore, where she
expected Yama-Mal would starve, but
God again came to her succor and she
was found by some fishermen,, who
took her In their bark and conveyed
her to court.
Then the cruel stepmother caused a
deep well to be dug In the court yard
of the palace, and one dark night she
threw Tama-Mal Into It and had It se
curely covered with a heavy marble
slab.
Once more, however, a. new and won
derful miracle saved the young prin
cess.
On the sixth day after her Inter
ment the Emperor, while walking In
the court yard, observed a vivid light
which glittered through the cracks on
the floor. He ordered the well to be
opened, and his astonlshmept wi
great when he beheld his daughter.
The empress then consulted a wizard,
and he advised her to lock the prin
cess In the trunk of an old tree and
cast Into the sea, which was done.
Nine days after a ship of the Mikado
found the floating tree nnd rescued the
princess, but this time she had suffered
for so long that she died.
As soon as she had expired she me
tamorphosed herself, Into, a butterfly,
and the next day she changed Into a
silkworm, which devoured with great
avidity the green leaves of the trees.
One day It did not eat, and died; but
live days after (or a period equal to
that spent by the princess In the des
ert) It came back to life. Soon, how
ever, It died again, and this time It did
not move for a period equal to that
spent by the young girl on the summit
of the mountain.
Then, when the silkworm came back
to life again, It was surrounded by a
beautiful aureola of light. It laid Its
eggs under this aureola, and the next
day many baby worms, each with an
auerola around Its body, were eating
with avidity the green leaves of the
tree.
One dsy nil the fields of Japan ap
peared covered with silk, the product
of the work of the million descend
ants of the beautiful Princess Yama-
Mal.

To Kaep Silver Bright.
To keep silver bright requires con
stant and persevering effort, for coal
and Illuminating gaa are active agenta
In tarnishing sliver, and very' frequent
ly housekeepers have great difficulty In
preventing It from turning. Unless
sliver articles are done up carefully In
canton flannel bags or wrapped about
with Jeweler's cotton and done up
again In paraffine paper. It Is neces
sary to clean the sliver at least once a
week to keep It In good condition.
Make a hot suds, to which a little
ammonia la added, and wash the sil
ver In It. After wiping with fclean dry
towels, rub thoroughly with canton
flannel. If thla plan Is followed every
day silver will not need to be regularly
cleaned more than once a year.
Wet salt or a paste of whiting and
ammonia will remove egg stain. Al
cohol will dean all vegetable stains.
French whiting, alcohol, two clean
brushes, jeweler's absorbent cotton,
several pieces of wash leather, a small
bottle of diluted oxgllc add and plenty
of soft cloths-will be needed for a gen
eral silver cleaning. Whiting and al
cohol will clean all ordinary stains
Radium breaks up into helium and
lead If Rutherford's Inferences are
true. Radium haa an atomic weight
of 225, and if each of the five alpha
particles given off Is an atom of heli
um of mass 4, the residue must have
an atomic weight of 255, about that
of lead. This (netai, moreover. Is pres
ent In all radio-active minerals.
from silver. If the dirt refuses to come
off the first cleaning, mix a paste of
the whiting and alcohol and allow to
dry on the article. Then rub dry and
polish. If stain still remains, wash
over quickly with the oxalic add solu
tion, then rinse Instantly. Follow with
alcohol and whiting. The acid leaves
a dull spot, so that It should afterward
be covered with sweet oil and whiting
and rubbed hard.
