New York, Sept. 10.—The stock mar
ket today opened a trifle higher for
most of the active Issues, but without
any sensational features. As has been
the case of late, the activity was con
fined to a few stocka; notably Atchison.
The announcement of the promised
gold engagement was delayed for some
reason or other, and when call money
opened at 0 to 10 per cent there was
a realizing movement which carried
prices fractionally lower, St. Paul and
Union Pacific being conspicuously
heavy. Altogether the professional
traders appeared to have neither con
viction nor the desire to acquire any.
Later It was announced that 310.000,-
000 had been engaged and more would
come, and sthe entire market rallied,
particularly the Southern stocks. Tha
trading was not In large volume, though
the market could not be called dull.
