New York, Sept. 24.—At the opening
of the local cotton market .there was
heavy selling, based on the weak ca
ble*. but also some good buying, a
part of which at least was credited to
spinners. First prices were 5 to 9
points lower, but the buying men
tioned and some bull support steadied
the list after the call.
The Liverpool market was decidedly dls
fournglnj; to the friends of cotton this
morning. It wns due to come ntmut un
changed. whereas prices at 12:30 were some
« IM.Ints lower on futures, while spot was
marked flown 8 imlnt* to 6.4?d for middling
on sales of 6.006 bales.

tine opened the week steady nt 60f|61V*c nnd
closed firm at 6114c. The closing price really
represented gain, ns small sales had been
made at 60V*c on the closing day of the pre
vious week. The climb wns really from
60%o to 6!*4e. Tuesday the price reached
61c, nround which figure It hung until the
close on Thursday, which wns V4o higher.
At the close of the market today prices
were firm nt 61V4c. but In the late trading
hour a weakness was evident. Sales were
made both nt file nnd 6J4c. while some fac
tors declined the lower price and some re
ceived no bids. Prices will hnrdly go be
low file for the present week, and may go
on considerably higher. Values are lower
than the same time Inst year by over 2
cents.
The rosltf market closed the week with
changes In some grades from the opening,
the pales lielng generally higher nnd the
mediums slightly lower. The offerings dur
ing the week were divided among a number
of buyers. The exporters known ns the
"combine” were hammering the market
early In the week, but later Independent
buyers blocked this program nnd bid higher.
The receipts continue slightly under Inst
year. The statistical position of spirits Is
good for a further rise, but In the present

Improvement Is noted In Texas and lu tti«

available, the movement from this section

northern counties, nml the crop there seems

In Mississippi, the weather has been
favorable during the week, on the whole,
complaints coming from comparatively few
places. Cotton Is opening fn«t, and Is be
ing rapidly picked, which is resulting lu
a fair movement.
In Alabama. It Is claimed that the crop
still shows deterioration, nnd rains have
Interfered with picking nnd moving of the
cron In some sections. The crop Is late,
and farmers nre holding to a great extent,
but the movement shows signs of lucrens-
0, ?hn Georgia crop Is also beginning to
move more freely, although It In undoubt
edly late. Farmers are marketing slowly.
It would seem from our reports that tho
farmers In Texns nnd In Mississippi nre
not Inclined to hold, whereas Just the op
posite may be said of the eastern belt.
Everything points to n greatly Increased
movement III the near future. The light
movement thus far this season seems to
l»e due to the lateness of the crop nnd
the disposition of farmers to hold In the
