be cut otf in one’s youth, just as one is ripening
into manhood and the eanh begins to shew its en- j
joyments, is surely one of the greatest of misfor- ■
tunes. It is needless to speak of the virtues of this I
young man. Let it suffice to say that he was 1
amiable and virtuous. We do not know of a sin
gle vice he possessed. In all his life he was quiet
and kind and benevolent. But a short while since
comparatively, health and vigor were written
upon his brow and upon his cheek; but suddenly |
consumption laid its hand upon his heart, and its
slow and merciless ravagings stole him away from I
his family and his friends and gave him np in
death. Regretted Jackson! lie toiled and strug- i
gled long. No doubt in the early stages of Ids I
disease his young and buoyant spirit sunk within 1
him in melancholy despair. No doubt he sighed j
to live and to enjoy the high advantages to which
he was horn. Hut when he saw that he must die, i
with a philosophy worthy ofan olderm m, he yield
ed the victory to his stern adversary, and quietly
submitted to bis irrevocable decree. Bright and
sunny was the morning on winch he died, lie
spent the last night in prayer and in soliciting in |
his behalf the prayers of the pious And when i
the morning’s bright sun shone forth, and the earth ■
looked smiling and beautiful, lie, smiling and j
beautiful said, “I must sleep,” and quietly closing i
his eyes, with no murmur or sigh or regret, he j
laid himself, we trust,
“On the bosom of his Father and his God.”
Departed this life, in the forenoon of the 15th
February, 1847, at his residence in Dallas county, j
in the midst of an afflicted family and a "ompany ;
of mourning and distressed friends. Hon. Reuben i

Upland and 1451 Sea Islands at the same time last
year.
At llio close of our last weekly report, we stated
that the Upland market was firm, with a slight
tendency upwards. The demand during the pre
sent week has been very moderate, and the sales j
small, but generally at a slight advance. Seva
ral holders continue to keep their stocks out of the :
market, rather than sell at the present rates. The :
principal business this week has beeu on foreign j
account. We have advanced our quotations an j
te per lb, which corresponds wit it the sales fur the i
last two or three days:

comprise the only sales of importance during the
week.
Salt. —- Two cargoes, consisting of 35-3 tons loose
and in sacks, have arrived since our last. We
hear of sales of 4, 8n0 bushel? at 17 els. per bushel,
and 5,20 ) sacks at 60 cents per sack. The balance
of a cargo, arrived last week, consisting of about
6 10 bu hels. brought 95c to $! per sack, in lots of
,V 1 to 100 sacks each.
Domestic Liquor* —Sales of 40 bids. New Or

f jCoi’M.—The recepts id" Corn from the up-country
have not been extensive during the present week.
We have heard of no large sales, except one lot of
1 .70(1 bushels whieh brought 874 rents, sacks in
cluded, and another lot of 2.500 bushels at 83c. per
bushel, sacks included. 200 bushels sold at 83

ami another lot of 610 bushels brought S7f rents,
sacks included. A lot of 800 bushels sold at 80c.,
and another of 500 bushels at same price, and one
of 300 bushels at 95 ets.. sacks included.
Freights. —Freights, both f oreign an I Coast
wise, are extremely dull, and have further declined
during the week. To Liverpool the rate is nom
inally FI- for square and round bales Cotton, and
fiOshillintis per ton lor Rice. 'The barque Hansard
lias been tak-n up for Havre, and has a full cargo
of square bales Cot’on engaged at It ets. per pound.
To New York, Philadelphia an 1 Baltimore, the
rates are nominal. A transient vessel for New
York, is filling up at 5 16 and }c, per Ih forsquare
and round hales Cotton and §1,50 per cask for
Rice, and we believe shipments by some of the
regular packets have been made at the same rates.
To Boston, engagements could be made at jc. lor
square and round bales Cotton.
CHARLESTON, March 13. Cotton. —The
falling oS'in the receipts, together with the de
cline in freight engagements, have during the
past fortnight produced quite a reaction in prices,
which it will be seen have materially advanced.
We left the market on Friday in a compa rativcly
quiet state. A good inquiry prevailed during
the day, but notwithstanding the improvement
which had marked the operations ol an earlier
period, there was a stringency in the terms of
holders which did not suit the views of purcha
sers, who retired after having bought upwards
of 1000 bales, at the quotations given in our re
port ot the blit inst.; since then, however, factors
have obtained advanced rates. The position of
affairs underwent no positive change either on
Saturday or Monday. A similar degree of con
tention prevailed among dealers, in relation to
prices, as at the close of the previous week. The
transactions on the former day reached 1481
bales, and on the latter the sales wore confined
to 578 bales. On Tuesday 1313 bales changed
hands, and there was a decided buoyancy in pri
ces at the close of business on that day. On
Wednesday, 1210 bales were sold, and s.llers at
the time claimed to have done better than on any
preceding day. The operations of Tin s lay ex
tend to 1900 hales, at ( a further improvement.—
Yesterday the sales were limited to 721 bales, at
the rales current on the previous day. Prices
have graudually been sti lening for some days,
and when the market closed, they wore consider
ed | to £c. better then those prevalent at the close
of last week, and we have changed onr figures ac
cordingly. The aggregate sales since our last,
cover 7225 hales, against the receipt in the same
time of 4839 hales. The sales comprise 11 bales
at 91; 707 at 10;2IG at 10*; 591 at 10*; 321 at 10|;
1481 at lop 552 at Jo|; 64 at 10 11-16; 790 at

madeto a moderate extent in common to mid
dling fine kinds of Long Cotton, at the reduction
of 2 to 3c. notice in our former report.
Grain. —The receipts of Corn during the week
are heavy, and comprise 11,000 bushels North
Carolina, 22,000 bushels per Rail Road, and 20C0
bushels South Carolina. The Hock i» on the
increase and prices have declined. Sales have j
been at extremes from 80 to 90c., chiefly from 84
to 90c. per bushel. About 4500 bushels Mary
land Oats have come to hand sine,- our last, which
were disposed of at prices within the rangcof our
quotations. Two or three small parcels ot Hay
have also been received and sold within quotation i
rates.
Sail. —The receipts of the week comprise G 723
sacks. Sales have been made at prices rang ing
from 90 to 95c. per sack, chiefly however at the
former price. Upwards of 2/00 bushels I urk
j Island have been received and shipped to a ncigh
; boring market.
Sugars. — fhevery heavy receipts duiing the
week seem, fur the present to have completely ;
; paralyzed the market. Several parcels of both
M uscovado and Louisiana in small lots, have
been offered within a few days, both at private
and public sale, but the transactions have been
very light. Purchasers it is thought are holding
back for the auction sales of Tuesday next. W e
| have for the present erased quotations ot both
Louisiana and Muscovados. Ihe receipts !
j comprise 736 hhds. 28 bills, and 190 boxes from
| the West Indies, and 107 from New Orleans. ;
i There was a public sale off 50 boxes brown Sugar,

Molasses. —Tlie supply ofthis article has also
' been unusually heavy during the week, and op
' eralions for the present are almost entirely sus
pended. The receipts are 1033 hhds., 138 tes.
and 64 bids, from the West Indies, and 151 bids.
' from New-Orlcans. A cargo of Cuba was sold
| a few d ivs since at 22c. for hhds. and 24c. for tcs.
1 subsequently, the highest offer for hhds. was 20
; ets. per gallon. None of the New-Orleans has
chang d hands. In the present state ot the
market we have thought it advisable to erase all
quotations.
Freights. —Wc quoted Rice engagements in
