COTTON.—Thema ket opened on Wednesday
last with the same dull aspect as noticed in our
la. weekfy review, both sellers and buyers anxi
ously awaiting the steamers advices then daily
expected, in which condition it continued up to
Saturday evening—closing heavily. By the North
ern mail of that evening, we received the steamers
accounts to 4th hist, per telegraph. The Liverpool
advices represent that market as having taken
a turn fi»r the better about the 19th ult. and that
prices had gradually advanced to i a Sd.—but
within the three days ending 3d inst. the demand
had fallen off, and price? had receded about jd.
leaving the actual advance about id. The mail
of Sunday evening brought the letter?, which in a
measure confirmed the telegraphic advices. On
Monday morning, our market opened with a brisk
enquiry, w hich was kept up during the day, and
holders found no difficulty in realizing an advance
on last week’s rates of le. on round and ic. on
square bales. The demand continued good yes
terday, ami (hiring the two days the hulk of the
►ales reported below were effected, and the mar
ket closed last evening with ranch firmness! ex
hibited on the, part of holders, and if any thing an
upward tendency in prices. The receipts continue
light in this city and Hamburg, ranch lighter

sales during the week foot up about 2000 bales,

GROCERIES. —Considerable additions have
been made to the stocks of our merchants within
the past week, and they have now on hand one of
the largest and best selected stock of goods held in
this market at this season for a number of years
past. The trade with the interior has not been so
brisk this week as last, but the transactions have
been to a fair extent, principally, however, in a
retail way. With Tennessee and Alabama, our
trade is daily on the increase, and during the past
week several merchants have purchased the bulk
of theirstocks in this market, finding R to their in
terest to do so, after having visited Charleston
and New York. And why should they not? Our
heavy merchants purchase their goods in I lie same
markets that the Charleston merchants do, and if
they ran effect ready sales can afford to sell to
country dealers, on as good terms, and for lower
prices,as they receive the bulk of their heavy goods
by the river, which is a much cheaper mode of
conveyance than by Rail Road. And ifourcoon
try merchants can, (as they ought to) purchase
goods in Charleston a shade lower than in Augus
ta, when they take into consideration the cost of
getting those goods to Augusta by Rail Road, and |
the delay attending their transhipment, they will
give our market the preference.
CORN.—Since the receipt of the steamers new s
the Corn maiket has been unsettled, no one ap
pearing anxious to lake hold, and the sales have
been confined to small parcels, mostly in hags, at
75c., bags included ,at which price about SJO bush,
els were sold yesterday.
BACON.—Our market at the present moment is
well supplied with this article. The receipts with
in the past week have been light, hut the few sales
made have been at last week’s prices. It is estima
ted that within the past three months more than
1,000,000 lb«. Bacon have been sold in Augusta.
FLOUR.—Country Flour is selling freely at 51
to 6, and s6i at retail. It is strange our country
friends w ho send this article to market will not put
i t up in merchantable condition; we were shown
yesterday, a small lot that was disposed of, which,
for the want of four hoops toeach barrel, brought
50 cents per hbl. less than ij .otherwise would have
done. j

MOUNT EAGLE TRIPOLI.
4 REMARKABLE mineral, pronounced by
geologists to be a great rarity in nature, and
known to them by the name of Tripoli, has lately
been discovered in this country, although hut in
one bed, of very narrow limits, all owned by the
“Mount Eagle .Manufacturing Company” incorpo
rated for the sole purpose of its manufacture.
The article is excellent for burnishing and clean
ing all finished metallic and glass surfaces, such
as gold, silver, brass, Britannia and steel vvate.
window glass, &c. Nothing has ever yet been
discovered equal to the pure Tripoli, and the com
mon language of the consumer is, it is the best
thing I ever saw. The genuine article is for sale
