Medical Uses of the Wild Cherry.
Ever since the settlement of America, Wild
Cherry has been known to possess very important '
medicinal virtues. Every body knew this fact, but
nobody knew how to extract its essential proper
ties. Every mother gives Wild Cherry tea to her
children lor worms, for colds, and for almost every
disease; and adults throughout our country are in
the habit ol making a compound or s yrup of wild
cherry bark, and other ingredients, to be used in
spring as an antidote to complaints incident to that j
changeful season. It is found by experiment, that j
the wild cherry possesses even far more important
qualities than was ascribed to it. For the first stages
of Consumption, Asthma, no matter how long stand- |
ing, Coughs, Liver Complaints, 6tc., it is proved to |
be the best medicine known toman. Dr. Wistar s
Hals am of Wild Cherry is a chemical extrdet, com
bined with a similar extract from Tar, which en- 1
hances its value. Its success in curing pUlmoiiary
disease, in almost every stage, after our best phy
sicians could do no more, has astonished the facul
ty, and led them to confess that Wistar s Balsam of
Wild Cherry possesses a principle heretofore un
known among medical men.

sells readily from 64 to 68c., with a fair demand.

NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 7. Cotton. —Arrived j
since the 30th ultimo, 224 bales. Cleared in the i
same time 7033 bales—making a reduction in stock
of 7709 bales, and leaving on hand, inclusive of all
on ship board not cleared on the 6th inst, a stock of
61.247 bales.
in our last weekly report we noticed a large
business in Cotton, consequent upon the favorable
Ktiropen advices brought out by the Britannia, at a
gradual enhancement of prices, until they reached
an advance of | a I cent per lb. upon the rates of
the week previous, though we had occasion to re
mark at the close that owing to the rainy weather,
the high claims of holders, and the daily expecta
tion of still later accouhts from Europe by the
steamship Washington, the market hail again re
lapsed into comparative quiet. This inactivity has
Eince continued, and only a very limited business
has been transacted during the past week. On
Sunday and Monday the Northern mail failed to
come through. leaviagall parties in suspense, and
little or nothing was done. Subsequently it was
stated, through the Telegraph, that the steamship
Washington was ashore on the coast of.Maine.but this
has since been contradicted, and the impression
now prevails that the steamer was detained at
Southampton longer than the day announced for
her departure—-the 10th ultimo. This daily ex
pectation and disappointment in regard to the re
ceipt ofJater news, has doubtless been a principal
cause of the very inactive state of the market, and
it is now so near the period when the Hibernia’s
accounts, to the 20tH ultimo, may be considered due,
that there is little probability of much being done
until her advices come to hand. The total sales of
the week sum up 4600 bales, the greater part of
which was sold on Thursday, and for shipment to
England. As regards prices, the market is deci
dedly easier than at the close of the last week, there
being more willingness to sell, and very few buy
ers ;but we cannot quote any general decline though
some rent inferier Alabama’s have been sold at less
than our previous figures.
The recent accounts from the interior in regard
to the growing crop are not of a flattering charac
ter. On Ike contrary much complaint is made of
excessive rains, which retard the maturing of the
bolls, and cause the forms to shed; and besides this
there is undoubted authority for staling that a va
riety of worms have appeared, doing partial inju
ry to the Cotton in some sections, though thus far
we have not become aware of any authentic in
stance of the discovery of the Catierpillar, of the
class which caused such havoc iast year, and we
trust that the crops may escape so dread a visita
tion.
