THE WIFE’S DRESS.
A work entitled * A whisper to a newly mar
ried couple’—says : ‘ There is not an hour in the
dav in which a man so much likes to see his
wife dressed with neatness as when she leaves
her bed-room, and si’s down to breakfast. At
nnv other moment, vanity stimulates her efforts
at the toilette, for she expects to be seen; but
nt this retired and early hour, it is for the very
sake of cleanliness, for the very sake of pleas
ing her husband, that she thus appears neat and
nice. Some one says, ‘ a woman should never
appear untidily or badly dressed in the presence
of her husband. ’ \\ bile he was a lover, what a sad
piece of business if he caught her dressed to dis
advantage ! ‘Oh dear, there he is, and my bait
all in papers; and this frightful unbecoming cap !
I had no idea ho would have been here so early,
lot me off to rny toilette !’ But now that In-is
your husband, ‘ Dear me, what consequences !
My object is gained ; my efforts to win him, and
all rny little manoeuvres to captivate, have been
successful, and it is very hard it a woman is to
pass her life in endeavoring to please her hus
hand!'

It may be noticed also that there is an apparent fall
ing off in the home consumption compared with the pre
ceding year, while the probability is that the consump
tion has been increased. The difference is found in the
fact, that, at the close of the last year the manufactur
ers had an unusually large stock on hand, while at the
close of the present they had very little.
CHARLESTON, Nor. s. —Our market has not for
several years been more brisk at this season of the year,
than it is at present. The harbor is full of shipping wait
ing for freights, and our staple is bought up as last as it
arrives, and when produce comes in more freely there is
every prospect of a good business.
Cotton. —The supply is as yet altogether inadequate to
the demand, which is active at the following rates : The
sales of the week have amounted to 4355 hales oi Up
land, viz : 1183 at 11; 438 at 19. 1 ,; 737 at 11 J ,; 225 at 11;

probably confirm. None of the new crop of long Cottons

Spirits. —Little is doing in Foreign Spirits; supply
small. Whiskey is scarce and in demand. Small sales
of Baltimore have been made at 361, cts. from Stores. Ap
ple Brandy sold from wharf at 41 cents. About 20 hhds.
and 50 bbls. New-England Rum sold at 37 a37i at which

Molasses. —This article is very scarce, the market al
most bare. Fine N. O. in tierces, a small lot, brought

Fruit. —Parcels of fresh fruit have arrived, and sales
were made. Grapes 2J a3i per jar. Bunch Raisins,

damaged part of a cargo from Malaga, will be sold at
auction to-morrow.
Freights —To-Liverpool, for Cotton LI. half square,
and halfround bales. To Havre, one cent for Cotton, &
$2 75 for Rice.
By the France at New-York,
HAVRE, Sept. 19.— Cottons. —There has been since
our last, a rather extensive demand for this article, and
we have to notice an advance of 1 to 2 centimes which
has only taken place, however, upon some caprice lots
of U. S. short staple Louisiana, of good fair to line qual
ities. There has been no change in the ord. to fair de
scriptions of the same Cottons, excepting Uplands,
which have experienced more inquiry at the old quota
tions. The prices of Brazil have also remained the
same.
The sales since the 10th inst. inclusive, have amount
ed to 79G2 bales as follows : 3597 hales La. at 90 a 115;
