Last Friday night, Susie Parker,wife
of Frank Parker, and member Y of the
colored population of Alamo, carhe run
ning through the streets, clad in male
costume, looking for an officer. Chief
Lowery came upon the scene and was
apprised of her troubles. She said that
a couple of "darktown coons” had in
vaded her home and were gambling and
otherwise making life misserable for
her, and that she wanted them arrested.
The Chief, together with some assist
ance, went over to the house pointed
out by the woman. Sure enough, they
found two men, Freeman Parker, hus
band of the woman who gave the alarm,
and Isiah Johnson. They were arrested
and locked in the calaboose until next
morning when they were given a hear
ing before Mayor Sears. When Susie
was called on' to testify her memory
failed her. She did not remember any
thing about what she had said.happened

ALAMO, GEORGIA, FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 1913
Mr. Clark Loses
House By Fire.
On last Saturday afternoon a dwell
ing house belonging to Mr. J. W. Clark,
about five miles above Alamo, was
destroyed by fire. It was occupied by
a son-in-law of Mr. Clark, Ralph Croft
and family, and they were away from
home at the time. The entire contents
were destroyed by the flames. Mrs/
Croft had gone over to visit ‘
parents, only a short distance aw,
when she saw smoke arising from Tre
building, but before she reached home
the fire had gained such headway that
she could not enter the house. The
origin of the fire is unknown, but it is
thought to have caught from a spark.
There was no insurance carried on
the property, and therjoss falls heavily
on IMln Clark, and rtost especially on
Mr. Croft, who lost everything he had.

Thought Wins.
A sound body is essential for physi
cal exertion, but it should be accom
panied by a well-disciplined mind in
order to attain the best results in any
profession, business or sport. A New
England college president is endeav
oring to stimulate mental activity
among his students for the purpose of
making them better equipped for their
future calling. This educator’s belief
is that the best way to make an ath
lete is to teach him first to think, and
that the best way to make a good man
is to train his mind so neither he nor
another can make the worse appear to
him the better reason.
Intellectual attainments are neces
sary in every calling. The student
who neglects his opportunities to de
velop his mental powers is very fool
ish, for whetT he goes out into the
world to earn a livelihood he will find
that the thinking man is the one who
gets ahead. On the sporting fields the
dear thinking athlete Is the most suc
cessful, easily outstripping his slower
comrades. Whatever is worth doing
at all Is worth doing well, and the
thinking student soon learns to be
thorough In all his efforts.
Perhaps Wanted to Purchase,
William Draper Lewis, at a dinner
in Chicago, said of a squabble be
tween two factions:
“if they knew European history,
they would not find these proposals so
unprecedented. But. they are ignor
ant. They are as ignorant of Euro
pean history as Cornelius Husk was
Ignorant of European art.
“Husk entered the national gallery
in Trafalgar square one day. He
watched a young student copying the
faded Rokeby Venus;»then he watch-
Sd^another young student copying a
cracked Holbein; then he watched a
third student copying a dim Ra
phael. -
“Finally he bent over the easel of
the last young man and asked:,
