Since that time it 1ms been remarkably healthy till the present time. Many fear a return of tlic times of ’57. The Post is decidedly tlic most popular paper that ever found its way intp Laurens and Johnson counties. Parties wishing to advertise in these two counties should bear this in mind. Wlmt has become of the engineer who wns to commence work on our river three weeks ago? Can’t Col. Probed or some one else rise and explain. Our people and merchants are beginning to chafe. There is to be a mass meeting of the cit izens in the Court House on the’lust Satur day in Sept, to take action in regard to cer tain matters reluting to the big Barbecue and Basket Dinner ou the 8d of October. The “Post” Beyond The Seas. BIr. T. P. Sarchett handed us last week a copy of the Guernsey (England) Mail & Telegraph, containing clippings from the Dublin (Georgia) Post. We stuted in last issue that 3Irs. Blary McLendon returned to Eastman with Miss Herman on the 1st tost. This was a mis take. We are glad to learn that she will remain in Dublin for a week or two yet, The Barbecue and Basket Dinner com. mittees met last Saturday in the Court House, The reports were “booming” with encouragement. Every one expects a grand success, and a good time, is anticipated all rouna. Don’t fail to read BIr. Tillery’s big advertisement. His store is being rapidly filled up with a magnificent Fall 8tock, and is altogether an exceedingly interesting place for parties to want of almost anything kept to a first-class store., Our clever and accommodating fellow townsman, BIr. W. A. Sims, contemplates building a store-house on the the comer of his lot next to the Court House and going into merchandising. He is a man of the fi nest business talent, and, wc feel wire, could build up a good business. Judge Wolfe received one of Schofield’s little engines last week by steamer, which is now iu operation, furnishing the niotiye power for Ills gin. The engiue is an im provement on anything of the sort that lias been brought to Dublin, nud is much admired by all who have seen it. By tlic Car Load! By tlic CnvLoad! The Macon Grocery Depot. We direct attention to tlio large adver tisement on tlio four 111 page of this Blrnn- mouth Grocery Store. J. B. Jones & Co. have been dealiug with this house for a long t ime—which is the best recommenda tion we could give it in Laurens and John son counties. A Sad Accident. Oh Inst Saturday Ynoming, Mrs. Eveline R. BIcLoou was going up the gin-house steps on BIr. Hughes’Whitehead place six miles West of town, when, about half way up, her foot slipped and she fell forward, striking her left side across a step, from the effects of which fall she died almost in stantly. Blaster Ashley Jones went out a few mornings ago to look for his calf. He found calfic hound hard and fast and unable to rise. It eftmo about on thiswise: His calfsbip had by some means got some of Mr. Johnson’s turpentine smeared over bis leg which lind hardened while said C. was asleep with his leg folded under him, and he awoke to find himself helpless. Pay-Day Has Come! We earnestly hope that every man in Laurens county who is in nrrenrs to the Post, will come to Court tlic 2nd Monday in October, or before, prepared to pay up. We started our paper in June—a time when it is idle to talk to most men of money; lienee wc agreed to wait with a large number of subscribcrs'till they could sell their cotton; hut wc never entertained the remotest idea of running the Post on a credit. It was only the season that almost compelled us to start on a credit, but wc intend to bring everything to a cash basis at the earliest possible time. Pay-day has come. It is needless to explain or apologize for our position. Every one knows that a paper cannot be conducted successfully, paying as it goes, and collecting as it can. An UnparcHfigwl Outragp, A HARMLESS OLD GENTLE.VA?? OF BBVKNi TY AND ONE OF IIIS GRAND-CHI l.JlHKN SHOT BY MASKED VILLAINS, On last Friday night seven masked men rode up to the bouse of Mr. Willard Gray, living two miles East of town, and hailed. As lie stepped out on the porch, they fired several shots at 1dm and riddled the house with bullets. A rifle ball aud four small shot struck the old man in the leg, and one or two small shot struck one of his grand children who was inside the house, in (lie luck, There Is .no clue to the perpetrators of this shameless horror. But this matter should he looked into, and the villains should every one ho made to .pull hemp. BIr. Gray is a harmless old man of about seventy years of age. The only thing that can be said against him is that he has two or three disreputable daughters. Dublin, Ga., Seft. 0th, 1878. Ed. Post: In my late snd'domestic afflictions', when every member of my family, myself in cluded, was prostrate with fever, when in this hopeless condition pur babe was taken from us, when in the midst of strangers we knew not where to look or wlmt to do, an unseen hand of charity supplied our ma terial wants, and we were otherwise com forted by the noble-hearted people of Dub lin. I desire, through your paper, to tender these Good Samaritans my heart-felt grat itude—especially those—as I cannot thank them in person—who have seen proper to do their alms in secret. I slmll bold iu grateful remembrance their disinterested kindness as long os life shall last, and hope they will reap their reward In the. land be yond the stars where such noble deeds will shine luminous when time slmll cease to be. * Jefferson T. The pros pects of the school were novor more flatter ing, and wc bespeak for it a liberal patron age. John B. Wolfe, Sec’t. W. S. Ramsay, Board of Trustees. Principal. We hope our excellent post master, BIr, Keen, when absent,.will have a deputy in the post office who is more competent titan Jim Wright. This week makes the sec ond time his ignorance or criminal cajclcs- ness, has come near doing serious injury to the Post. Two or three weeks ago after the Wrights ville mail arrived \ye went to the office and asked Wright for our mail. He said there was nothing for us. We replied that we felt sure we bad something—and asked hint to let us sec the mail hag. On looking in the bag, wo found four letters tor the Post.
