Tho young Republic’s brow is wreath'd,
With Bays bar valor bath achiev’d,
And ooarngo won.
Yet while suoceao high revel keeps,
She turneth from the crowd and weeps,
Her missing sod.

Who stood like Israel's chosen Saul,

Not dead, for only cowards die;
Ha left earth’s sod.
Cover’d with glory’s sacred soars,
Crown’d with a coronal of stars,
Want home to God.
Though widows now may mournful weep,
And in despair sad vigils keep,
In time shall tell i
Their orphan’d children, how their sire,
Bravely 'mid carnage, smoke and fire.

And wake the poet’s breathing lyre—

And history’s atone page grew bright,
When she with iron pen shall write,

A Card.
Messrs. Editors: 1 learn that quite a num
ber of your readera have attributed to me the
authorship of tha patriotic letter of William
E. Rogers, to hia father, which oppeared in the
Daily Confederacy of 12th July, and after
wards in the Weekly.
I suppose that thia arises from the fact that
Mr. Rogers waa a student in m j office at the
time, and from ignorance of his character and
capacities, I deaira to state that he Is the au
thor of the letter. I did not write it, nor did I
know that it wee written uutil my attention
was called to it by the universal commenda
tion of those who road it.
I make this statement as a matter of justice
te a talented, brave and patriotic boy It years
old, who Is nbsant in the service of bis coun
try, nnd who is rendy to offer, on its battle
fields, 44 Liberty's last libation.”

On Saturday night. Capt. Lovell, of the

he tanned for the shore with five Federal
launches ia hot pursuit of him. This waa re
peated the second time, but no shots were
fired from either aide. From 200 to 250 men
