Macon don’t often get enthusiastic;
but when she does, she does. Witness
the following, from the Maoon Telegraph
of Sunday: Yesterday afternoon a rich
scene was witnessed at the Fair Grounds
when the hands had finished their day’s
work. W'em weeks they had been toiling
start*! inseaaantly through sto.-m and
anhlhlne, man if eating an interest in the
work they were doing rarely seen among
laborers. Day after day had our worthy
Mayor walked among thorn with word*

an herculean one, they at length saw it
completed. When their tools were laid
aside, they seized upon Mayor Hoff, and,
hoisting him upon their shoulders, car
ried him all about tde grounds, perfectly
intoxicated with excitement, and giving
retd to their feelings of joy with one un
broken shout of mirth. Aey are sorely
entitled to credit for the zeal they hare

•‘Let Us Lots One Another.”
The general sympathy so generously
manifested for thoso who have been driv-
from happy homes by the demon of
destruction at Chicago, makes us think
better of human nature. Now, while
the publio heart is attuned to thoughts
and deeds of Christian oharity and love,
we hasten to claim some portion of ita
beneedenee tor those poor women and
children who were driven from their
homes at Borne, Marietta and Atlanta,
Ga., and Columbia, 8. C., and other
cities of the South, by this same demon
of destruction—incendiary Are. At this
late day we do not ask for thorn any pe
cuniary aid; but we do entreat all good
people to unite in one general effort to
oxorcise the demon of sectional hate; to
re-establish fraternal relations, and cease
to treat the people of the South as 'con
quered rebels.
Major Nicholls, aid-do-camp to Gen.
Sherman, in his '•Great March tothe Sea,”
aays:
“In the peaceful homes of the North

uns.”
In one of the translator's notes to De
Oaaasgnao's History of the Workiog and
Burgher Classes, recently published by
Claxten, Bemseu A Haffelflnger, we find
the fallowing touching appeal addressed
to General Sherman on tne 11th of Sep
tember, 1864. Though unheard during
the oiash of arms, we trust that now it
will surely touch the hearts of the people
of the North, and lead them to kinder
feelings for those who have suffered so.
much in the South.
Major NJeboUr adds that than on
whose behalf this appeal was made to
Genoal Sherman were “women and
children. These people seemed to be
almost entirely of the lower class. The
wealthier citizens removed from Atlanta
before the firing began; those only re
maining who were wuliog to take the risk
of shot and shell, and tha possibility of
Federal ooenpation.”
