support of ii?- ancient Slate rights dor-
trines, together with the known antece
dents of most of the nominees, caused
us to doubt the Democracy of nearly
nvery ono wlm wuh placed upon the
ticket. This distrust was strengthened
in the oase of General Slocum by tho
report which we leceived of his action
ns commander of the Military Depart
ment of Mississippi, nml particularly in
the matter of Governor Sharkey’s pro*
damatmn for the organization of tho
militia of that Stato. So long ns we felt
this distrust, ho long us we believed that
General Slocum was tbe representative,
not of the Democratic party, but of tbe
Albany Convention, wo could not give
him our support. Hut bis speech lias
satisfied us that be is now a thorough
going State rights Democrat, fully im
bund with tbe principles ot the true De

deserves the cordial support of the Xeics,
but ought to receive the vote of every
Democrat in tbo State.

mations of the President of tho Unitod Slates
having given freedom fU every slave, and the
oath ol amnerttyand tho condition* of pardon
forbid any attempt at iu revival in uny form or
condition.
Tbo great mass of the Agricultural Popula
tion of tho State lias been released from their
obligation to cultivoto the roil, except by their
own volition, and it must he apparent to the
judicious obforvor, however much to bo regret
ted, that tho voluntary labor of tlie newly fiecd
population will r.ot lor tbo prosent, at least,
supply tho deficiency of luoor.
Tlie withdrawn! of nearly threo hundred
thousand ablo bodied persons to a greater, or
less extent from their muni vocotious ha*
created a void which murt bo filled or tho land*
of tho State will remain uutillud, her great re
sources undeveloped aud her futuro prosperity
sacrificed.
Tho remedy, and the only rernody for this
condition of athiir* consist* in tlio immigration
of a hardy and industrious white population, to
supply the places of those who cannot be com
pelled to work and whoro dispositions do not
incline them to greater labor than i* actually
necessary to support life.
To such immigrant*, no Stats offore greater
inducements than the Stato of (ioergia. Ex
tending from tho Atlantic Ocean te tho Bluo

climate. Tho Savannah^ of tlio coast, the roll
ing country ol tho intorior, and tho mountains
of the northern part of the State nfiord oppor
tunities for tbe cultivation of utmost every pro
duct of tropicol or temperate latitudes.
The grane is grown with groat success in many
parts of the State and its cultivation has only
been limited by the want of persons shilled iu
tho knowlo<igo ol the vino pud of the mode of
preparing its yield. Tho State ii also rich in
gold and other initioru;*, uud nothing hut ener

wanting to the development of these hidden

The rail ing of sheop of the finest broods baa
been carried on with success, und tbe vast ran

Tho numerous rivers and smaller streams tak
ing their rise in tho mouutain* and running
through tho State into the Atlantic and the
Gulf in their gradual descent furnish water
powor unfailing in any season and capable of
putting into operation any kind of machinery.
The area ot the state contains upwards of
thirty millions of acres, of which not more than
one third has been cultivated and the virgin
forest of tho wild land* afford an inexhaustible
supply of lumber which formed a heavy item
of the exnorts of Georgia prior to our late diL-
