Queries by a Woman.
Why is it that an unattended woman at
tracts so much attention from the other
sex? Why is it that, when one of this same
other sex enters a railroad car, omnibus,
horse-car, or any other public conveyance,
he at once casts abont him for prey, and in
variably pounces npon the woman who car
ries her own satchel, pays her own fare, goes
her own way, nnd minds her own business?
Why is it that be deliberately places himself
where he can look at her, and,
whether talking with another or bolding pre
cious commnnion with his own sweat self,
keeps her in his sight until she somehow

seat by her side, and coolly examines her
wardrobe, as though be were a custom-house
officer on the alert for female smugglers?
Why is it that he gallantly seizes tbe oppor
tunity to resign his comfortable seat to two
women and a poodle dog? Has
be an overwhelming desire to see his
iellow-beings comfortable? It is be
cause he so dislikes to separate those travel
ing companions, OTer whom his lip carted as
they entered ? Did he feel snch an insane
desire to confer a favor npon them that he
must now say, with premeditated hesitation,
‘ 'I regret the necessity of inconveniencing yon,
madame, but I niust'ask to share your seat.”
Does be regret the necessity that now gives
him an apparently legitimate chance to ask
this woman who she is, where she is. going,
and why she don't take somebody with her ?
Cab he' calmly raise his hand toward the
hlne vault above him, and truthfully say
that he has not anxiously longed fer snch
a contingency? Hasn't he revolved a
thousand plans for making his attack npon
her reserve, and isn't be abont to pnt the most
diabolical one into execution? Hasn't he
imagined the effect of some original remark
already familiar to him through frequent rep
etition, bnt of necessity new and striking to
her ? Ain't there a suspicions air of patron
age abont him as he settles down to his task;
and doesn’t there seem to be lurking some
where the suspicion that he deems himself
vastly superior to her ? Doesn't he think her
a little prudish if she don't meet him half way

Grant's Orphan Colt.—Mr. Hill happened
to be in the city of Washington. He had
been there before—a member of Congress.
Civility caused him to visit Grant. In cam-

England he went to the. White House. A
small trotting wagon, to which was attached
a smaller animal, stood beneath the porch in
front of tbe main sntranee. As Ur. Htll and
his Senatorial friend approached the door it
was opened, and through it esme tbe Presi

continues: "That colt’s an orphan; born since
