Need of Negro Reformatory
Shown in Court
Friday.
In a peculiar way the need of a re
form school or Industrial farm fo
youthful negro criminals was eirtpha
sized In the criminal division of thecltv
court Friday morning, when the case of
Fred Buchanan, aged 14 years, was
railed for trial. The boy was rts white
a* any white boy ever dared to be, with
the exception of*a few stray streaks of
dirt, which only served to heighten th?
whiteness of his skin. He was charged
with assault and battery.
“What Is the reason that boy can’t he
sent to the reform school?" asked Judge
Calhoun as he survej’ed the youthful
prisoner. "Call* up Probation Office
Glo^r and find out." v
Officer Gloer was called up and as
tounded the court by declaring that
Buclmhan was a descendant of the race
of Ham.
There was no reform school to which
the hoy could be sent and there WH
nothing else to* do hut set his case for
trial at the May term of court and he
will remain In jail until that time, un
less released on bond, which Is Improb
able. Attorney John Moore represent
the negro.
