d its exist, which are but so many obstacles in the
wav of the proper treatment of the disease. The
following letter from a highly respectable gentle
man ®f this city, corroborates our previous im
pressions, that Wistar’s Balsam was none of those
nostrums.
Boston, April 11,1846.
Dr. Seth W. Fowle.—Dear Sir, I have been in
duced at the suggestion of many of my friends, to
make known to the public, through you, the great
benefit I have derived from the use of the medi
cine called “WISTAR’S BALSAM OF WILD
CHERRY,” in the hope that others suffering w ith
lung complaints may find the same relief by its
use that 1 have dune.
The latter part of last summer ami in the fall, I
suffered greatly from a severe cough, pain in the
side, difficulty in breathing, loss of appetite, and
other symptoms which indicated a rapid decline
three of the most learned and intelligent medical
practitioners in the city pronounced my case con
sumption, and staled to me that nothing but a
change of climate could he of the least possible
benefit to me, as my lungs were in a very inflamed
and diseased state. At this time, in hopes that I
might find some temporary reli f for my cough, 1
bought a bottle of the Balsam, which not only
gave me the relief that my failing stength required
but seemed to give me new life and energy.
After taking several bottles of the medicine, my
appetite returned, and with it my strength; my
cough entirely le t me, as also the night sweats,
which previous to this time had been very profuse.
In five weeks time I gained eight pounds of flesh
and have been enabled ever since to take ray ac
• tstomed exercise, a walk of from three to four
miles a day, and attend to my regular business.—
1 should be most happy to have you refer any one,
who may wish further particulars to me, at ray
place of business. No. 3(>5 Washington street.
Very liuly yours,
WM. H. HOLBROOK.

The amount of suffering relieved by the invalu
able preparation is without a parallel in this histo
ry of medicine. Thousands have been restored to
health by its healing and regenerating efficacy,
who were considered past the reach of remedial
means, as various certificates herelolore published
abundantly prove. It has received the entire ap
probation of many pracritionp.rs in this and other
cities, and its rapid growth in the estimation of the
public has placed it beyond the reach of detrac
tion or the efforts and competition. Diseases which
arise from impurity of the blood or viiiation of the
humours generally, such as Scrofula or King’s
Evil, Rheumatism and Incipient Gout, Salt Rheum
and other cutaneous diseases. Fever Sores, Inter
nal Abscesses, Fistulas, Chronic, Catarrah, Ul
ceration of the Throat and Nostrils, painful Affec
tions of the Bones, Chronic lull itnrnation of the
Kidneys, Female Derangements, General Debili
ty and Prostration of the System, are all removed
by its use.
For further particulars and conclusive evidence
of its sujKttior value ami efficacy, see pamphlets,
which may be obtained of agents, gratis.

stock of 166,196 bales.
When we closed our report on Tuesday last the
Cotton market, as for several days previous, was
in a very inactive elate, there being little or no
disposition, on the part of either buyers or sellers,
to enter inio any operations of consequence until
in possession of the Hibernia’s ad vices, from Liv
erpool to the 19th, ultimo, then considered about
due, by telegraph and express. On Wednesday
we were still without the steamer’s accounts, but
ad vices four days later by the ship Rainbow, at j
New York, came to hand. On Thursday a tele
graphic slip from Fredericksburg announced the
arrival of the steamer. This intelligence disap
pointed the hopes of most parties, and being inde
finite a? to the closing position of the market, little
«»r no disposition has been manifested to operate
here, on the part of either buyers or sellers, until
in receipt of full particulars by the private letters
and commercial circulars, which are due by the
mail of this morning. The total sales of the past
three days barely reach the iriflng amount of 1400
bales, generally at a material decline; but the
quantity sold is so small and the prices so irregu
lar that no accurate quotations can be given, and
we are compelled to omit our figures until we can
rearrange them upon a more settled and definite ba
sis. The total sales of the past week are only
3600 bales.
Sugar, Louisiana.— The Sugar market contin
ues in a very quiet state, the only demand being
for limited parcels, principally of the better grades,
and the prices range about the same as before
quoted—say for Inferior 5 a si, Common 51 a 61,
Fair 61 a 61, Prime 7 a 71, Choice 7i a7l cents
per lb. The receipts, though light, are raiher
mure than equal to the sales, and the supply i*
fully maintained. A sale of about 250 hhds. was
made some days since on plantation, at 61 cts. per
pound.
Molasses —The business in Molasses is still of a
limited character, the receipts, as for some time
past, being reduced to occasional small parcels,
which are pretty readily disposed of at a range of
26 a 30 cents per gallon, according to quantity, J
quality, &c Cuba .Molasses i? more plenty, and
has declined. A lot of 80 bhls, was sold at 25,
and yesterday 280 barrels at 26 rent* per gallon.
Bacon. —We have no change to notice in the
Bacon market as to prices, though ihe inquiry has
been better, and about 250 capita have been dis
posed of at our former range, 8f a 9 cents for Sides
and 6 a 7 cents per lb for Shoulders —the highest
figure for good Cincinnati cured. Hams are more
abundant and dull at 51 a 11 cents per ib. fur infe
rior to the best canvased and sugar cured.

J. T. U..n*!lcy, Editor.
THIS Magazine, formerly under the care of D.
Mead, commences its Fourth Volume under
the editorship of J. T. Headley, author of “ Napo
leon and hi* Marshals,” ** Washington and his
Generals,” “ Letters from Italy,” Ac., &c. We
hazard nothing in saying that the Magazine is des
tined to fill a large place in public estimation; that
it will not only maintain its present enviable repu
tation, but earn to itself a far higher popularity,
and become the coir pan ion of many a circle to
w hich it is now a stranger, gladdening by its pre
sence, while it exerts an influ-nee pure, elevating
and healthful. The editor will (tend his energies
to make, this the most popular Magazine of
the day, and while availing himself of assistance
from the best writers, he will draw freely from his
own exhaustless store.
It will continue to maintain it* high moral tone,
and nothing w ill he admitted into its columns w Inch
will minister to corrupt passions and tendencies of
youth, or w hich the author “dying would wish to
blot.”
The design a* to offer the public a Magazine
containing all the attraction and interest of the
lighter periodicals, w hile it moves in a different
path, and is not exposed to the same objections.
It is issued monthly, commencing with May,
containing 32 pages of oiiginal matter, printed on
fine paper, in handsome, covers, with a splendid
steel engraving, and colored flower, in each num
ber, with occasional music, and is got up in every
respect in the best style of the art, making a yearly
volume of 384 pages, full of choice illustrations,
and forming an eiegant ornament to the parlor ta
ble. or a rich and valuable present to a friend.
Back nlimbers and volumes always on hand.

for $5. 8 copies for sl2.
The Press and the public are daily awarding ns
the very highest testimonials of the editorial abili

which it is embellished, placing it in the very first
rank in every respect, among the thousands of
which we select the follow ing :
“Mr. Headley’s lively and versatile pen is ad
