lauves on Commercial Fertilizers.
Writing on the subject of commercial
, fertilizers, Mr. J. B. Lawos, a noted
Euglish chemist, and for many years
manufacturer of manures, says tho only
two substances really required in artificial
manures, are—
1. Nitrogen.
2. Phosphate of lime.
Nitrogen is useful in three forms—
1. As nitric acid.
!l 2. As ammonia.
u 3. As organic docomposiblo matter,
yielding ammonia or nitric acid.
Nitrogen is more valuable in tho form
of nitric acid than it is in ammonia, nud
ammonia is more valuable than docaying
substances yielding it. Tho best possi-
ble manure for all gramineous crops,
wheat, barley, maize, oats, sugar-cane,
K? rice, pasiure grass, is a mixture of super-
£ phospha‘0 of lime and nitrate of soda;
800 lbs. of superphosphate of lime nnd
175 lbs. of nitrate of soda applied every
yo:ir to ono acre of ordinary English
laud, has for twenty consecutive years
givon a produce aunually of U
Q uarters of bailey; 14 tous of farm yard
ling applied annually over tho same pe
riod has given the same produce of bar
ley. Superphosphate of lime is a special
Chemical manufactured which can be
made cheaper on a larger than on a small
er scale, and therefore farmers ought to
f iurcha.se it cheaper than they can make
t, but it is better to make up their own
* compound lununures, purchasing their ni
trate of soda or salts of ammonia. It is
Dot advisable to sow artificial manure
with beans, peas, tares or other legumiu-
jilfl oils plants. Corn and root crops will
gjg” take all tho artificial manure which the
farmer can afford to pay for. Superphos
phate of lime should always be placed tin
kler the soil, oithor by drilling or harrow-
ling in when the seed is sown. Nitrate of
poda may bo sown the same way, or it may
lio sown broadcast when the crop is up.
I Tho increase in tho growth of tho cereal
J| <*rop is much more dependent upon tho
. ^ nitrogen supplied than on the phosphoric
^^•cid. Potash is generally found in sufli-
: eieut quantities iu soils, and tho artificial
supply is not required.
