Court Rnsincss—Showing for Seven Yearn
The return days having closed, wo find
that twenty equity (four of them being
for divorces) end thirty-six common law
cases were entered on tho docket. This
is the smallest number of common law
cases probably ever brought to otir court.
Tho average for tho past no van years has
been one hundred and twenty-four at each
of the yearly terms.
As many might like to read it, wo give
tho calendar for common law cases, which
represent the main business of the court,
since 1867:

This shows 1767 common law cases
which have been commenced in our Su
perior Court in seven years, or an averago
of 124 at each term. It will bo noted
that tho business has largoly decreased in
tho last few years. This shows the people
are too poor to sustain the luxury of law
suits. When a country is rich litigation
flourishes.
More About the Shingle 1/1// Meeting,
Persons who attended inform us that
the Democratic mooting at Shingle Hill,
Russell county, was very enthusiastic, tho
best of feeling prevailing between tho
whites and blacks. Thoro were at least
ono hundred and Jlfty voters present, in
cluding twenty-five or thirty colored. All
of the latter enrolled thoniHolves as mem
bers of the Democratic club. A. G.
Jones, candidate for Representative, and
Ulysses Lewis, Esq., of Houle, made capi
tal addresses. Good talks were also giv
en by Messrs. Baker and Walker, of Mar
shall. Bill Birch, colored, gave a timely
and sonsiblo talk to tho negroes present.
Tho greateHt enthusiasm prevails through
out the neighborhood, and advocates for
Radicalism arc as scarco ns lion’s tooth.
The Democratic club at Shingle Hill, now
numbers between ninety and ono hundred
members, and is constantly growing.
Another meeting will bo hold next Sat
urday night for tho formation of an Inde
pendent Democratic colored club. This
meeting promises to bo largely attended.
Colored Man Fobbed of Fight// Dollars.
All in Columbus know Alfred Har
graves, a respoctablo colored man, who
attends to tailoring, cleaning and scouring
clothes business. IIo lives in one of tho
brick houses opposite Thompson’s Rtablos.
He is a married man and has children.
Yestorday morning ho awoke and found
tho door and window to his sleeping roojp
had been broken open. Search revealed
the fact that during ilia night about
eighty dollars in money had been taken
from bis clothing. A fine gold watch nar
rowly escaped. The day before, bo had
broken tho gold chain. Tho hitter was
arelcssly placed in an inside vest pocket
with ten silver halves. The watch was
hung on a nail. Tho silver and chnin
were taken by the tbiof, and nlfio all tlie
money in Alfred’s pants pocket. Ho did not
discover tho watch. No clue that wo have
yet hoard of.
Columbun Horten at Atlanta—Their Pedi
gree* and the Races.
Columbus has three fast horses in At
lanta—Moseley's “Spider,” II. Y. Klink’*
“Harnestring,” and Jack Odom’s “Mac.”
“Rebel,” entered in the Georgia raised
trotters by II. B. Heals, of Eufanla, AD.,
really belongs to Columbus, for until very
recently lie was owned by Mr. M. C. Gor
don of this city, and was trained on onr
track by Henry Klink.
SOMETHING ABOUT THEM.
Wo find in tho Atlanta /Jerald their
pedigrees, which may be interesting to
many. The appearances of the horses
aro too well known hero for description
Harnestring was sired by that very cele
brated four-mile thoroughbred “Frank
Allen,” with a record of 7:45, in a four
mile race, and 3:46 in a two-mile race on
tho Columbus course, in one of his four
mile races tho judges gave him credit of
running the last mile in a second heat, or
the eighth inilo in 1:46. Ho was sired by
“Hawkins Priam,” of North Carolina, and
his dam by imported “Trustee.” Atone
time ho was the properly of Mr. McDan
iels. It is said be pronouuced him the
equal of any horse that had ever appeared
ou tho American turf.
It will bo seen that “Harnestring” has a
strain of blood in him that would give
him strong claims to favor in a race of
broken heals, when blood tolls. “Hamo-
string” is eight years old.
Moseley’s “Spider” is seven years old,
partly of f he Morgan stock, and was raised
in Columbus. His best recorded time is
2.-464, but Columbus turfmen claim he
can push 2:30 dose.
“Basil Dako” is describod as a Ken
tucky, roan horse of the copper bottom
stock, owned by Chas. II. Phini/y, of Au
gusta, Ga., and in charge of J. W. Craw-
fyrd, of that city. His best time is 2s84£,
made in Augusta last May.
Our Atlanta correspondence shows the
condition of the race on Monday for Geor
gia raised horse*. A delayed telegram in
forms us that “Harnestring” won this race
on Tuesday, winning $100. IIo was the
favorite in the pools on Monday. Mr.
Jack Odom drove him after the second
heat, he being thirty pounds lighter than
Klink. “Rebel” took second place, and
“Rip” tho third. The shortest mile whs
made by “Rebel” in 1:50$. “Harnestring”
made two straight hoats—each in 2:56$.
Telegrams have already announced that
“Spider” won the 2:40 race on Tuesduy.
Addressing the People.

Colton Thief Arrested.
Policeman Smith yesterday arrested a
negro liutiiod Iverson Young, nlias Geo.
Thorutou, who lmd in bis posession a
suspicious looking express load of cotton
and potatoes, believed to bo stolen. In
tho express wore about 250 pounds of cot
ton and n bushel or two of potatoes. Tho
suppo.sod thief was put in the lock-up to
await identification of plunder.
More (Iraregard Desecration.
A gentleman oil visiting his cemetery
lot on Sunday found Hint some infamous
scoundrel had cut deep into tho mnrhle
which coverod tho grave of ono dearly
loved, tho names of two mon and two
women. Not content with only cutting
the namos, wiili a sharp pointed instru
ment, scrolls woro traced around tlio sig
natures. Wo would give tho names in full
(we know nono of tho parties) woro it not
for tho fact that it is possible tho apparent
signors may not be guilty of such desecra
tion.
No one has a right in another’s yard in
the cemetery unless tlioy have permission.
Tho soxton is a policeman, ox otlleio, and
he should so© that the rights of owners of
burial lots are respected. Thoro is great
l-eniissness in the maintenance of order
there. Tho sexton should apply for
eistance, if it bo required. It is nut usual
for parties to bo in such a hurry to have
their names ou touih-stonos, and wo did
not dream thoro was a human Doing in
this seotion mean enough or hnsc enough
to commit such an act. The perpetrator
may yet be discovered and puniahod.
• Sent to Jail.

tho nogro boys arrested oil Tuesday under
chargo of breaking upon tho barn of Mr.
L. G. Bowers, in Wyuuton, aud atouling

aud .the proof being deemed conclusive,
they were sent to jail in default of a $100

Enthusiasm in Old Harbour.
Prominent gentlemen up from Eufaula
yesterday spoke very hopefully of tho po
litical prospools of that time-honored old
county. It is now considered as u mat
ter of certainty that Barbour will go
Democratic in Novembor, for tho first
time sinco the war. Members of tho
party are working with a vim and enthu
siasm worthy of tho good cause, and tho
boat of fooling prevails between the
whites and blacks. Hundreds of the lat
