Help with Searching
The Georgia Historic Newspapers Archive allows for keyword searching using a search box at the top of each webpage, and also by using the county pages and the Advanced Search page.
Keyword Searching
Every page on the website has a search box at the top, just below the Home tab. This box will allow you to search for terms that appear within five words of each other on a newspaper page. There is no limit to the number of words you can enter in this box. Once you have entered your search terms, click the “Search” box to the right, and you will be directed to the search results. Clicking one of the thumbnail images will take you to the newspaper page with your search words highlighted on the page.
Advanced Searching
To perform more specific searches, select the “Advanced Search” tab at the top of the homepage. This will direct you to the Advanced Search page. The options on this page will allow you to limit your search by city, county, type, region, newspaper title, and date.
The first three “Search Terms” boxes allow you to enter the keywords you want to appear in your newspaper page results. Entering words into the “Exact Phrase” box will allow you to search for words that appear next to each other in that exact order. The “Any of the words” page will allow you to search for newspaper pages where at least one of the words entered into the box appears somewhere on the page. The “All of the words” box will allow you to search for newspaper pages where every word you enter in the box will appear on the page. These three boxes can all be used simultaneously if needed.
The “Proximity Search” box will allow you to search for words that appear within 1, 2, 5, 10, 50, and 100 words of each other. Enter your search terms in the box on the left and use the dropdown box on the right to select your desired proximity.
The “Limit By” section allows you to limit your searches by city, county, region, and date. You can select as many cities, counties, and regions as you need, and the dropdown boxes will allow you to browse through those that are available.
The “Search selected newspapers” will allow you to limit titles by title. You can select as many titles as necessary. The dropdown box will allow you to browse through the titles available on the website. Note: Some titles changed names over time, and they must each be selected separately. The “Additional Filters” section will allow you to search by publication frequency and will allow you select only title pages for the search results.
Once you have selected all of your search parameters, click the search box at the bottom of the page. This will direct you to the search results page.
County Search Page
The Georgia Historic Newspapers homepage has a county map of the state of Georgia. You can hover your mouse pointer over a county to see the county name and the number of titles, issues, and the date range available for that county. Clicking on a county will direct you to the list of titles available from that county. There is also a search box above the county list that will allow you to search for keywords in newspapers from that county.
