Take action for DeKalb
Growing our economy.
Seeding innovation and
creativity. The future of
education. Race and poverty.
These are just some of the
topics that have rattled our
community in the past year
and must be tackled going
into 2015.
After talking all year
long, now it’s time to take ac
tion, whether it be on some
thing already discussed or a
new idea that comes to the
table.
This year, we hope the
community can focus on
one resolution by answer
ing the question “what can
and should we do to make
DeKalb County a better place
for all in 2015?”
Recognizing that there
are small issues and large,
and that concrete, realistic
goals engender action and
progress, we know that find
ing a single, community
resolution is, in and of itself,
a lofty goal. But we’ve seen
community conversations
produce action already and
know good things come
from trying.
Stakeholders from
around the region, we chal
lenge you to bring new ideas
about how to improve the
quality and long-term finan
cial stability of our education
system.
Policy makers, we chal
lenge you to think critically
about residents concerns and
needs, and adjust budgets ac
cordingly.
We looked at the issue of
poverty in our region where
students from low-income
homes, area shelters and
churches shared local sto
ries of their families living
paycheck to paycheck, some
who fell ill and lost their jobs
or for lack of transportation
had difficulty holding down
a job. We want to know what
more could be done to help
ease the burden for those
families and the nonprofits
and other organizations try
ing to assist those in need.
Hopefully, we can come away
with a better understand
ing of the issue and a sense
of duty to find ways to be of
service to others.
Perhaps one of these top
ics will produce a burning
desire to do more, to make
a change. Maybe there is a
more pressing need. Maybe
there are another idea for a
goal that the community can
embrace to make DeKalb
stronger. We hope the pub
lic will be generous with
ideas and opinions to us
elected officials. New ideas
could lead to the change that
DeKalb needs.
