That’s the message approximately two dozen members of the church wanted to convey Jan. 30 when they protested outside the DeKalb Housing Authority in Decatur. “We are here today protesting the injustice that is being inflected upon our congregation and the community at the hands of the DeKalb Housing Authority,” said Rev. Barrett Johnson, senior pas tor of Travelers Rest Baptist Church, also known as The Church. The church is located on the only privately owned land in the 55-acre Tobie Grant Manor public housing complex, which is now a construction zone. Photo by Travis Hudgons Seniors get their own space in central DeKalb by Andrew Cauthen andrew@dekalbchamp.com With 45 percent ofDeKalb County’s seniors living in cen tral DeKalb, Commissioner Jeff Rader said there was a clear need for a new senior center. And that’s what seniors got Feb. 2 with the grand opening of the Central DeKalb Senior Center, located at 1346 McCo nnell Drive, Decatur. “I think that you’ll agree that this particular location here in Mason Mill Park, over looking this beautiful play ground and other facilities, is an ideal location for folks to spend time,” Rader said during the ribbon-cutting event. The 15,000-square-foot, $5 million facility is adjacent to an existing recreation center and Mason Mill Park. The center includes exercise rooms, a clin ic-level patient meeting room, cafe and lobby space, and a full catering kitchen that supports dining for 120 and lectures for up to 170.
