Matt Slappey is deeply
involved in his childrens
lives.
As a Decatur business
growth advisor, Slappey
helps people buy and sell
businesses, and he’s exposed
to many different compa
nies.
Slappey said talking to
current and former clients
many made him realize that
many people do not under
stand the fundamentals of
business finance.
He said, “It’s really im
portant because as people
talk about the raising of
minimum wage, which
could be a great thing for the
people receiving the money,
there’s also the business side
that impacts the business
owners.”
He added, “I want my
children to understand that
there are two sides to busi
ness transactions and what
that means as a consumer
and as a business owner.”
Slappey has set out this
summer to share his exper
tise with his three young
daughters, ages 10, 13 and
15, by teaching them how
to manage their own snow
cone business.
Slappey purchased a
snow cone machine for
$1,500 and has allowed his
youngsters to set up in their
neighborhood, Oak Groove
Festival and local sporting
events.
He said many business
concepts are not taught
on the elementary school
and middle school levels.
“If they’re going to make a
slushy, they know the cups
cost one or two cents, the
straws costs a penny, and the
mix itself may cost 50 cents
per cup; it’s getting them to
understand that there are
costs associated with every
thing they do beyond the
cost of the machine.”
In operating the busi
ness, Slappey said his chil
dren have learned firsthand
about the cost of materials,
overhead, risk, supply, de
mand and profit.
He said the experience
is rewarding to have good,
open conversation with his
girls.
Ten-year-old Ashley Slappey works the slushy operation at her swim
meet.
Slappey shared a recent said his 10-year-old, Ashley
scenario with teaching his asked what she should do
children about business at when her friends come up
the Oak Groove Festival. He and want a snow cone? “Do

millage rate will be formally adopted.
The tentative increase will result in a millage

increase of .381 mills. Without this tentative
tax increase, the millage rate will be no
more than 2.414 mills. The proposed tax
increase for a home with a fair market value
