Continually striving
for perfection
Were not perfect.
We, The Champion Newspaper, try to be
perfect week after week, but we fall short. We
are, after all, human. Our reporters, editors,
legal and accounting staff, designers and pro
duction personnel strive to do their very best
to produce an exceptional product for our
readers.
However, we, like all professionals, con
tend with failings related to everything about
our product. It’s both annoying and unac
ceptable to us when we fall short of delivering
the best newspaper that we know we are ca
pable of producing. So we keep on striving.
Some folks love to point out when they
catch an error or inaccuracy in our paper,
when a comma is missing or name mis
spelled. We try awfully hard to ensure it
doesn’t happen, but it does. Despite, three
editors reading every story coupled with daily
editorial staff meetings, things get missed,
overlooked, misinterpreted. We try to be at
the most significant events that affect the
lives of residents of all parts of the county and
deliver the news that sheds light on city and
county issues, education, sports and even the
fun things in life on our lifestyle pages. We
think it’s important for our readers to know
who’s making things happen in DeKalb and
who’s not, as well as who’s keeping watch on
the powerbrokers, so we profile key players in
politics, religion, education and the commu
nity and tell their stories of why and how they
are involved.
Despite not always achieving perfection,
we must be doing something right.
Recently the Georgia Press Association
(GPA) recognized our efforts and bestowed
us with 25 awards for writing, photography
and design.
On June 5 at GPA’s awards banquet on
Jekyll Island, The Champion Newspaper re
ceived first-, second- and third-place awards
in local news, education, business, editorial
writing, lifestyle, religion and more. Several
of our staffers; including Andrew Cauthen,
John Hewitt, Carla Parker, Travis Hudgons
and Donna Turner, were individually cited
for outstanding work. Freelance contributors
Kathy Mitchell, Gale Horton Gay and Nigel
Roberts as well as cartoonist Fitzroy James
were also among the award winners. We were
competing against 17 other newspapers in
our category. And we once again took home
the coveted first-place General Excellence
award that includes our advertising awards
(ceremony held separately in May). Kemesha
Hunt, Hewitt and Hudgons were the big win
ners in that arena.
It was a proud moment indeed for all of
us.
There’s no professional group that rates
the work of our colleagues who makes sure
that all the legal notices published weekly are
properly processed and published, however,
we know what a stellar job they do-both in
taking in the information and communicat
ing with the public. Thanks to these staffers,
we play a part in the process of legitimizing
marriages, divorces, adoptions, incorpora
tion, bankruptcies, foreclosures, name chang
es and more through the publication of these
notices in our newspaper.
So as we celebrate our most recent recog
nition for excellence in journalism, know that
we do not rest on our laurels but continue to
strive to make The Champion better every
day and in every way.
