City to hold holiday decoration
contest
Avondale Estates will hold its an
nual Christmas and Holiday Spirit
Awards Dec. 15-16. Judging will take
place Dec. 15 and winners will be
announced Dec. 16. Judges will view
decorations on residences, store
fronts, building exteriors and display
windows from a vehicle passing
slowly or stopping in front. Judges
will not leave the vehicle for close
viewing of decorations. Winners will
receive a Christmas Spirit award. For

City to host birthday celebration
Brookhaven will celebrate its
third birthday Dec. 17. The celebra
tion will be held at City Hall—4362

City to host holiday ball
The Red and White Ball will be
held Dec. 12 at Fynwood Park Com
munity Center in Brookhaven. This
holiday ball and toy drive will benefit
people of all ages. The ball will fea
ture dinner with a jazz band provid
ing the entertainment, and will also
be a means to donate to Toys for Tots
to go to children in need during the
holidays. Fynwood Park Community

Annual Mud Run scheduled
On April 20, 2016, Chamblee
Middle School will host its second
annual Fun Mud Run at 8 a.m., 3601
Sexton Woods Drive, Chamblee.
The Chamblee Fun Mud Run is a
5K race featuring obstacles, mud and
fun for all ages. All proceeds benefit
the Chamblee Middle School Educa
tion Foundation (CMSEF).
The event is open to the com
munity and is recommended for
children ages 8 and up, as well as and
adults of all abilities.
The 5K course winds through
the Keswick Village and Sexton
Woods neighborhoods as partici
pants complete multiple obstacles
that involve simple challenges in the
mud. The 5K is a timed event. Par
ticipants receive a mud and water
proof ankle tag.
There is a 3K (approximately 2
mile) Muddy Buddy race immedi
ately following the Chamblee Fun
Mud Run, recommended for ages
5-7 who are accompanied by an
adult. Participants will complete the
mud obstacles, but will run a shorter
course.
Early Bird Registration runs
through Feb. 29, 2016, with a $25
fee for the 5K and a $20 fee for the
Muddy Buddy 3K. For information

Parents invited to speak with
school superintendent
DeKalb school superintendent
Stephen Green will present the next
“On the Scene with Dr. Green” on
Jan. 21 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Columbia
Middle School, 3001 Columbia Dr,
Decatur.
Green said the meetings allow
him to keep his ear to the ground
in DeKalb County while working to
address issues already visible in the
school district.

ART Station to host Stories With
Santa
Santa and his elves will be at
ART Station Dec. 19 for “Stories
With Santa” from 11:30 a.m. to 2
p.m. The event will include lunch
and a performance by Santa. After the
performance, Santa has arranged for
good boys and girls to “whisper their
Christmas wishes” into his ear. Ticket
prices are $12 for adults and $6 for
children ages 12 and younger. Tickets

Nonprofits partner to raise funds
In November, the Rotary clubs of
Stone Mountain and Northlake part
nered to sponsor their second annual
Electronics Recycling Day, raising
funds for Friends of Disabled Adults
and Children (FODAC).
Held at First Christian Church
of Atlanta in Tucker, the event gar
nered eight pallets of used electronics,
everything from old phones to CRT
televisions to boom boxes, as well as
cash donations totaling more than
$300. FODAC will sell some of the
working pieces in its thrift store, and
the rest will be sold to aggregate re
cyclers specializing in safe disposal of
electronics.
The event helped keep several
hundred pounds of old electronics
out of landfills, and proceeds will sup
port FODAC s main program which
supplies home medical equipment,
sucb as wheelchairs, walkers and
shower benches, to the mobility im
paired and their caregivers, at little or
no cost to the recipients.
Sorority prepares Thanksgiving
baskets
On Nov. 20, the Tau Pi Omega
chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha So
rority Inc. in conjunction with The
Council for Community Enrichment
partnered with the Ruby Hoke Mis
sionary Society of Antioch A.M.E.
Church in Stone Mountain to assem
ble Thanksgiving baskets.
The baskets included items such
as canned goods, stuffing, beans,
soup, juice and other nonperishable
items for a Thanksgiving dinner for
families that were pre-selected by the
church. The effort provided meals,
complete with turkeys, for 125 fami
lies.
Tucker
New Air Force recruiter assigned
SSgt Shonda Hooper was re
cently assigned to the U.S. Air Force
recruiting office, 3983 Favista Rd,
Tucker.
Hooper is a recent graduate of
the Air Force Recruiting School in
San Antonio, Texas, where she was
trained in various areas of study, in
cluding the job classification system,
testing and enlistment processing
procedures, and public speaking.
Hooper was selected for the spe
cial course and recruiting duty as a
volunteer with an outstanding Air
Force record.
Prior to Hoopers assignment
here, She was stationed with the 48th
FRS, at RAF Fakenheath in logistics.
Other assignments since enlisting in
the Air Force in February 2008 in
clude: Minot, N.D., Kunsan, Korea,
and Royal Air Force Fakenheath in
Suffolk, England.
County Extension application
period extended for 2016 mobile
market season
DeKalb County Extension is call
ing for applications for the DeKalb
Mobile Farmers Market stops for
2016. Faunched in May of this year,
the mobile market has provided fresh,
affordable produce and food dem
onstrations to county residents. The
market visited areas around the coun
ty four days a week for 16 weeks. Ap
plications for the 2016 season will
be accepted online at the link below
through Feb. 1, 2016.
The DeKalb Mobile Farm
ers Market is a program of DeKalb
County Extension with support from
the DeKalb County Board of Health.
The program is made possible with
funding from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
