Keep Christmas
year-round
The halls are decked.
The turkeys are stuffed. The
stockings are filled. The gifts
are wrapped. It’s Christmas
time in the city.
During this holiday sea
son, often filled with stress,
depression, disappointment
and gluttony, it is a good idea
to remember the ideals that
make Christmas special.
David Grayson, an
American journalist, who
lived from 1870-1946, once
wrote, “I sometimes think we
expect too much of Christ
mas Day. We try to crowd
into it the long arrears of
kindliness and humanity of
the whole year. As for me, I
like to take my Christmas a
little at a time, all through
the year. And thus I drift
along into the holidays—let
them overtake me unexpect
edly— waking up some fine
morning and suddenly say
ing to myself: Why, this is
Christmas Day!”’
We often consider
Christmas to be time of
peace, love and giving, and
it is, but it is just one day,
and should not be the only
day dedicated to such ideals.
Christmas should be year-
round.
Indeed, the Bible, which
describes the true Christmas
story, states that we should
“let no debt remain out
standing, except the continu
ing debt to love one another,
for whoever loves others has
fulfilled the [Ten Command
ments]” (Roman 13:8).
Our “continuing debt” of
love cannot be fulfilled in a
day or a season. It can only
be paid by a lifetime of love
and service.
So let us love and serve
and volunteer and give all
year long, because that’s what
Christmas is all about: the
God of love bringing love
to Earth so that we can love
each other.
Henry Van Dyke, an
American author, educator,
clergyman and contempo
rary of Grayson, said, “Are
you willing to believe that
love is the strongest thing
in the world-stronger than
hate, stronger than evil,
stronger than death-and that
the blessed life which began
in Bethlehem nineteen hun
dred years ago is the image
and brightness of the Eternal
Love? Then you can keep
Christmas.”
Let’s keep Christmas all
year long.
