Proclaiming commitments
more than a once a year
Were just a week into the
new year of 2016 and some of
us have already broken those
heartfelt resolutions we made on
New Year’s Eve. Don’t feel alone,
many more will join the ranks
of “I promised to, but I just can’t
seem to keep it” in the weeks
and months to come.
Making resolutions at the
start of a new year is a fun and
easy thing to do because it gives
us hope, makes us feel like we’re
on the verge of making big
changes in our lives and in the
world and, let’s be honest, every
one else is doing it and most of
us like to be a part of the crowd.
But sticking with those lofty
resolutions is often anything but
easy.
So what should we do? If we
really want to make good on our
promises, we have to approach
things differently. We need to
have constant reminders of why
we made the resolutions in the
first place. Somehow we have
to keep a fire in our bellies for
more than just a flitting mo
ment. We have to keep the rea
sons for our dissatisfaction front
and center and maintain focus
on what we know we can do to
make a difference. It shouldn’t be
hard to do, but frankly it is.
Let’s resolve to look harder
in the mirror about what we
have to do to make personal
changes in our lives and col
lective improvements to our
communities. Let’s use what we
know, what we read in newspa
pers and magazines, what we
watch on television and what
we observe and hear about that
concerns ourselves, our families
and our communities to keep us
motivated.
And let’s be realistic about
making progress as well. Setting
the bar too high simply leads
to disappointment—and usu
ally pretty quickly. Start small,
make steady progress and notice
the incremental changes. This
applies to personal goals such
as losing weight, being more
courteous, arriving on time for
events or meeting deadlines.
And the same is true of broader
goals such as making our neigh
borhoods safer, mentoring
youth, being involved in civic
affairs and more.
Lor guidance and inspira
tion, consider the words of Pres
ident Barack Obama: “Change
will not come if we wait for some
other person or some other time.
We are the ones we’ve been wait
ing for. We are the ones that we
seek.”
