A lthough it would be years
before it’s constructed,
DeKalb County officials
are making preliminary plans to
locate a new government center on
Memorial Drive.
Located at the intersection of
Memorial Drive and Kensington
Road, the $90 million building would
be eight stories and have 300,000
square feet. It would replace the
county’s Maloof and Clark Harrison
buildings in downtown Decatur and
the tax commissioner’s building on
Memorial Drive.
“We are currently occupying
about 600,000 square feet...for the
same functions, but the facilities
were simply not designed with the
most efficient use in mind,” said
Zach Williams, the county’s chief
operating officer, during a recent
meeting of the Special Purpose

Developers discuss Township Tucker proposal
by Carla Parker
carla@dekalbchamp.com
The vacant Sears Distribution
Center on Hugh Howell Road at
Mountain Industrial Boulevard has
been an eyesore for nearly 10
years and a developer is looking to
fix the problem.
Macauley Investments
LLC presented a mixed-use
development proposal called
Township Tucker to attendees
at a meeting on April 26.
The proposed $300 million
redevelopment plan for the 90
acres of land includes retail
space, restaurants, community
greenspace, townhomes, senior
living, apartments, a hotel and a
movie studio/production facility
and screening rooms.
The plans also include space
for a city town hall or amphitheater.
Stephen Macauley, principal
of Macauley Investments LLC,
said the movie studio/production
facility will be the first facility of this
kind east of Los Angeles, Calif.
“The type of jobs that it will
bring in are really good jobs,”
Macauley said.
The proposal will include
sidewalks as well and a possible
trail that will connect existing
communities to the development.
Macauley and his staff
presented two Township Tucker
options—the first option included
an elementary school on the
property, and the second option
featured an enlarged movie studio
without the school.
The DeKalb County School
District is currently in the process
of looking for properties to
construct a new building for
Smoke Rise Elementary Charter
School. Daniel Drake, director
of planning for the school district,
told residents that the proposed
Township Tucker could possibly be
one of the proposed sites for the
new school building.
“We are in need of a
replacement site for the Smoke
Rise Elementary School and this
is on possible option that we are
looking at,” Drake said.
