BY HORACE HOLLOMAN

Decatur Active Living
Citizen's Advisory Board
member and Realtor Kelly
Walsh is vying for the Decatur
District 1 commission seat
after qualifying for the
position in August.
Walsh, who moved to
Decatur with her husband
Pat in 2005, said the city is
a great place to be and that
she wants to "keep Decatur
moving."
Walsh will compete
against Tim Martin,
Melissa Manrow and Betty
Blondeau.
"It's a really busy election
field, and to me, that indicates
a real excitement about
where Decatur is headed,"
Walsh said. "I have to work
hard and earn the trust of
the neighborhoods. I'm
embracing the competition."
In the weeks to come,
Walsh said she plans to
continue her door-to-door
method of campaigning.
Walsh said if elected, she'll
focus on issues such as
creating more green space in
the city and safety initiatives
for a walkable city.
Walsh said the city's
walkability is one of
Decatur's "greatest assets."
She advocates for more
connectivity throughout
the city with walking paths
and bicycle paths through
commercial districts and
neighborhoods.
"Decatur's really a fantastic
city and I've enjoyed living
here for the past 12 years,"
Walsh said. "We're going into
new strategic planning at
the commission level and
my family has thrived here.
I enjoy the walkability and
I want to make sure that
continues."
Walsh said she also wants
to keep the city diverse and
livable for all income levels
by developing affordable
housing for city and school
employees and create more
affordable housing for
seniors.
Early voting for the Nov. 7
begins Oct. 16 and ends Oct.
31.
"[Decatur residents]
should vote for me because
of my strategic planning
background. I've sat on
various boards and active
living boards.That mindset
and experience is critical
because Decatur has to
update our comprehensive
plan for 2020. We're a great
planning city and to bring
that mindset would be
important/'Walsh said.
