No change in District 3 county commission seat
DeKalb County
Commissioner Larry
Johnson held on to
his District 3 county
commission seat after a
victory over Felton Wright
in the primary election.
Johnson, who has been
in office as a commissioner
for nearly two decades,
defeated Felton with 80
percent of the vote May 22
at press time.
In an email exchange
with The Champion,
Johnson said he’s committed
to “results you can see.”
“I believe in District
Johnson
3,” Johnson said. “ I want
to continue to connect the
unconnected, strengthen
our infrastructure, pave our
roads, continue to be an
advocate for increased pay
and benefit packages for
our public safety personnel
and build a world class
parks and recreation system
to better the health of the
residents of DeKalb.”
Johnson said making
sure the county’s public
safety officials receive pay
increases is one of his top
priorities. Other expressed
priorities are building
infrastructure and making
sure residents live a healthy
life.

In the primary

compared to Johnson’s

was a competitive field
with four individuals
competing for the seat.
Challengers Jared Tolbert and Ed Williams
also ran for the District 7 seat.
As of press time, Tolbert had 7 percent of

Adams, who was elected as District 7
commissioner in December of 2016, said he
was more experienced with allocating taxpayer
money than any other individual running for
the seat.
“I have successfully handled constituent
concerns for over 350,000-plus residents.
I currently oversee hundreds of millions
of dollars that are allocated for DeKalb’s
infrastructure and growth,” Adams said.
“I am the only candidate in this race who

With 71 percent of precincts
reporting at press time, Johnson won
the election with 65 percent of votes,
defeating Genet Hopewell, who

During the campaign, Johnson
emphasized how she ran a “positive
campaign” after Hopewell’s camp sent
flyers about Johnson’s bad press. The
mailer mentioned Johnson’s handling
of the criminal trial of former DeKalb
County CEO Burrell Ellis and an
incident in which Johnson allegedly
refused to grant a bathroom break for a
defense attorney, which resulted in an
