Chamblee Charter High
School’s (CCHS) quiz bowl
team competed in the 2018
High School Quiz Bowl
Championship May 28 at
Atlanta Marriott Marquis.
The team, which consisted
of four juniors and four
freshmen, finished 5-5 on the
day. Coach John Donegan said
he wished the team could have
won six games, which would
have allowed them to compete
in the playoff round May 29,
but he was pleased.
“Given that we have four
juniors and four freshmen, that
wasn’t bad at all,” he said.
It was the second
consecutive trip to the national
tournament for CCHS, and the
second time they finished 5-5.
“We just can’t seem to get
over that five-win hump,”
Donegan said.
Freshman James Hardy
led the team in number of
points scored per number of
questions heard. Hardy heard
129 questions through six
games and answered correctly
17 times. Four correct answers
came early enough that Hardy
was awarded a “power,” which
resulted in extra points.
Hardy’s four powers were
tied with junior Sifat Raihan,
who led the team with 131
questions heard. Junior Sam
Lehmann was second in
questions heard with 130.
All four juniors, including
Raihan, Lehmann, Ben Blanck
and Rohan Misra returned
from last year’s team which
also competed in the national
tournament. Donegan, who
also coaches Chamblee Middle
School’s quiz bowl team, said
he’s confident that the team
might make the national
tournament again next year.
“A few of the freshmen
we have coming in are
really good,” he said. “And
our highest scorer this year
[Hardy] was a freshman, so it’s
a good sign.”
Donegan said he was also
pleased with his junior varsity
team, which finished first in
the Georgia Academic Team
Association (GATA) State
Championship in Division 3
on March 10. The team scored
more than 400 points in all but
one of its matches and finished
5-0.
Donegan said coaching
quiz bowl at CCHS is difficult
because the team often can
only meet for practice once a
week or once every two weeks.
The players are often divided
between other activities as
well. A few sophomores on
the team missed the national
tournament due to a Boy Scout
retreat.
“At other schools, like
[national tournament winner]
Plano, Texas, [quiz bowl] is the
only activity the kids do,” he
said. “So I’m very proud of [the
CCHS team] for making the
tournament.”
Marist High School also
competed in the national
tournament, finishing 4-6,
which put them at 247th out
of 352.
