An arrest has been made
in the shooting death of Cedar
Grove High School graduate
Trevon Richardson.
DeKalb County police
officials said 18-year-old
Detavion McDay was arrested
May 31 at 12:20 a.m. He has
been charged with murder
and is in the DeKalb County
jail. McDay allegedly shot
and killed Richardson, 18, on
Memorial Day.
DeKalb police responded
to The Life at Peppertree Circle
Apartments in Decatur around
9 p.m. May 29. Officers found
Richardsons body lying in the
parking lot. He was killed four
days after graduating from
high school.

said he warned his son, the
youngest of his four children,
hours after graduation to be
careful of his surroundings.
“I told every last one of [my
children] before they go off to
college that when you graduate
you have to be careful because
every time a graduation
happens, immediately after
that someone gets killed
or someone goes to jail,”

are the things that we worry
about as parents before we

send them off to college. I had
this same conversation with
Trevon the day he graduated.”
He said his son was staying
at a friend’s house not far from
where the shooting happened.
“He wasn’t just straying
away from home,” Richardson
said. “We knew where he was
and unfortunately something
else happened [at] the event
that took him away from where
he was supposed to be.”
Family and friends of
Richardson gathered near his
Ellenwood home May 30 for a
candlelight vigil to remember
the standout athlete who made
everyone laugh.
“He was always happy, had
a smile on his face,” said Anton
Cousins, who played football
with Richardson at Cedar
Grove. “If we were losing, we
were down or winning, he was

DeKalb County Announces Human Services Grant
Application Period
Public Information Meeting to be held June 20, 2018 at 10:00 a.m.
DECATUR, Ga. - The DeKalb County Human Services Department announces the
beginning of its 2018-2019 Human Services Grant Cycle. The purpose of the Human
Services Grant Program is to provide opportunities for community partnership with
local organizations that can successfully address identified human service needs of the
citizens of DeKalb County, Georgia.
Eligible non-profit organizations are encouraged to apply for the opportunity to be
awarded a grant funded with County General Fund and Victim Assistance funds.
Agencies that receive Victim Assistance grant funds, must meet the County’s eligibility
criteria and must also be certified to provide victim assistance programming through
the State of Georgia Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.
The Human Services Grant Program is competitive and the total amount of awards
allotted each year is based on the availability of funds. Funding from this grant program
is designed to supplement existing programs and activities.
Examples of appropriate service areas for the Human Service Grant Program
include, but are not limited to, prevention and intervention of violence against
women, youth development (to include addressing safety and/or risky behaviors,
education needs, homelessness and economic well-being), building family unity
and sustainability, supporting individuals with disabilities and/or senior adults to live
inclusive lives within their communities, and homeless intervention/prevention.
A Public Information Meeting scheduled for June 20, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. will provide
the specifics regarding the Human Services Grant application process. The meeting
will be held at the Central DeKalb Senior Center, 1346 McConnell Drive, Decatur,
Georgia 30033.
