Four years after the murder
of Shaniqua Camacho, 21, and
Sonia Williams, 20, Demetre
Mason apologized to the
families of the victims before
a judge sentenced him June 14
to life in prison without the
possibility of parole on.
According to testimony,
Mason and fellow 9 Trey
Bloods gang members
Frankland Henderson and
Michael Jenkins were acting
under the direction of gang
leader Malcolm Brown.
Brown allegedly ordered
a hit after Williams insulted
Brown.
DeKalb County Superior
Court Judge Linda Hunter
sentenced Henderson to life
in prison without parole and
Jenkins to 50 years in prison
with credit for time served.
“To the Camacho family
and to the Williams family...I
apologize,” Mason said.
Williams and Camacho
were shot and killed May 19,
2014. The two women were
at a gathering with other
gang members. According to
reports, an argument ensued,
and the women were beaten
by several gang members. The
women eventually escaped on
foot but were gunned down by
Henderson and Mason in an
apartment complex.
Shirley Camacho,
grandmother of Shaniqua,
said her granddaughter was a
loving, kind, forgiving person.
“In the past four years,
we’ve celebrated her birthday
at the cemetery. She was a
beautiful fun-loving person
with a zest for life,” Shirley
Camacho said. “We all loved
and cherished her. Her murder
shocked our family.”
Williams’ mother, Michelle,
was not present during the
sentencing, but wrote a letter
to the court.
“It’s a day I will never forget.
It was my birthday and it was
also the day my Sonia was
murdered,” Michelle Williams
wrote. “I can’t tell you the pain
I felt. There’s no comfort for a
parent when your daughter is
murdered.”
Derek Mason, brother of
Demetre Mason, said it’s not
too late for his brother to turn
his life around. Mason said
gang violence is a poor life
choice.
“The gang thing isn’t the
way and you need to tell
everyone inside that ain’t the
business. You still have the
power to change on the inside.
I love you,” Derek Mason said.
Brown has not been to trial.
Demetre Mason, Henderson
and Jenkins can still file a
motion for a new trial.
