Local parks are great venues for making summer memories

Finding a place to escape to this
summer doesn’t necessarily mean
having a big budget, hopping on a
plane or taking a road trip.
One of the likely most
overlooked resources for summer
fun are local parks.
Local municipalities as well as
the county have recognized the
importance of greenspace, parks and
recreation centers as well as having
a diverse range of outdoor things
to do such as pool events, races and
walks, concerts, outdoor movies, pet
workshops, art activities and more.
Here’s an overview of some of the
programs and activities taking place
throughout DeKalb County this
summer at local parks:
Brookhaven
Brookhaven’s 14 parks and outdoor
venues offer a wide range of
activities and programs including
fitness, sports, creative workshops,
pet health and more. The city’s
parks’ programs and activities
can be found online at www.
brookhavenga.gov/parksrec. Here
are a few:
• Summertime is when park pools
shine. What better combination
than watching a movie while
splashing around in a pool.
Brookhaven’s Briarwood Park pool
is the venue for a “dive-in movie”
on July 13 when the movie Coco
will be shown from 9 to 11 p.m.
The park is located at 2235 Briar-
wood Way, Brookhaven.
• If running is your thing, consider
signing up for It Starts in the Parks
5K/1K on July 21 at Blackburn
Park. The IK begins at 7:15 a.m.
with the 5K stepping off at 7:30
a.m. Cost is $30-$35. The fourth
annual event has been scheduled
to coincide with National Parks
and Recreation Month. The course
begins and ends at Blackburn Park.
T-shirts and awards for various
categories will be presented at ap
proximately 8:30 a.m. The park
is located at 3493 Ashford Dun-
woody Road, Brookhaven.
• A pet first-aid class is offered Aug.
5 at the Ashford Park activities
building from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The hands-on class covers CPR
and rescue breathing, how to treat
bleeding and shock, muzzling and
restraining and more. The fee is
$90. Register at www.dobiemom.

ford Park is located at 2980 Red
ding Road NE, Brookhaven.
• Brookhaven Parks and Recreation
offers a series of drawing work
shops for young artists. The Young
Rembrandts program is designed
to teach children technical skills
of drawing. Workshops remaining
in July for children ages 7 to 11
include:
• STEAM Illustration, July 23-27,
focuses on images of biology, ro
bots and other science, technology,
engineering and math
• Monsters, Creatures and Creeps,
July 16-20

Chamblee
Chamblee’s eight parks offer
residents and visitors an array of
activities on hot summer days and
starry summer nights.
• Atlanta Sport and Social Club is
currently taking registrations for
Sunday ‘B’ league and Sunday ‘C’
league adult softball at Keswick
Park Softball Field with games
starting July 22 and ending Sept.
30. More information about reg

Park is located at 3496 Keswick
Drive in Chamblee.
Dunwoody
Dunwoody has seven major parks
and 170 acres of greenspace and
several events planned in July.
• Dunwoody Walk with a Doc takes
place at Brook Run Park from 9 to
10 a.m. on July 14. A partnership
between the city and Emory St. Jo
seph’s Hospital has resulted in this
free monthly exercise and educa
tion initiative. Participants have
the opportunity to walk while con
ferring with healthcare profession
als who can answer questions and
provide information. Healthful
snacks, coffee and blood pressure
checks also are provided. The park
is located at 4770 N. Peachtree
Road, Dunwoody.
• Groovin’ on the Green, described
as a family-friendly concert, jumps
off from 6 to 9 p.m. on July 14 at
Pernoshal Park, 4574 N. Shallow-
ford Road, Dunwoody. Music lov
ers are advised to bring blankets,
lawn chairs and basket loaded with
picnic treats.
• It’s movie night at Park at Per
noshal Court, 4575 N. Shallowford
Road, Dunwoody on July 28.),
“Bring the family, your blanket or
beach chair and relax under the
stars and enjoy Star Wars: Last
Jedi (PG-13) on a giant 45’ screen,”
states information about the free
event. The movie begins at dusk.
