COUNCIL Back to school means changes for most We often think of back-to- school time as a subject that mainly affects parents, teachers and school staff, but in reality, most of the public is affected by what will be increased vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Metro area commuters usually draw a sigh of relief as the school year comes to a close each May. Summer breaks mean fewer cars on the roads, no stopping for school buses and fewer pedestrians. However, the reduction of cars, buses and pedestrians is temporary, and like school summer breaks—only lasts a couple of months. With DeKalb County School District and City Schools of Decatur schools back in session, driving is a bit more of a challenge for most. Drivers should be even more aware of their surroundings as students and buses crowd neighborhood streets and sidewalks. Those who live near football stadiums will experience more vehicular and pedestrian traffic as the football season kicks off Aug. 17 and runs through Nov. 3. DeKalb County School District’s (DCSD) five stadiums—Hallford, Godfrey, North DeKalb, Adams and Avondale—are shared by all high schools in DCSD. City Schools of Decatur has one stadium located in downtown Decatur at Decatur High School. Those who work in or frequent establishments located in shopping malls or near middle and high schools will notice an increase in the number of teens as most will have their favorite hang-out locations and they typically are not in any hurry to leave. From traffic patterns to Friday nights on the town, most of us are impacted in some way when students are back in classrooms. SACK TO SCHOOL TIME.... 1 n:o&-75 ..rfc?
