Punishment for Reuf: Fourteen years
in the penitentiary, the maximum sentence
provided for bribery of a supervisor,
was the penalty meted out to Abraham
Reuf, who for years directed the
political destinies of San Francisco as
adviser of the city adminisiration of
Eugne E. Schmitz. former mavnr of itio
city. Judgment was pronounced at the
close of a day devoted to a legal battle
for a new trial. When Judge Lawlor had
denied this and other motions involving
delay, the defendant arose at the court's
command and stood unmoved through
the recital of the judge. After a trial
that was prolonged through a period of
nearly four months, Reuf was convicted
on December 10 of bribing John J. Fuery,
a former supervisor, to favor the award
of an overhead trolley franchise to the
United Railroads. This was one of four
men inuiciments returned against Reuf
by the Oliver grand jury which heard
the confessions of sixteen supervisors,
who admitted the acceptance of bribes in
several matters involving public service
corporations. One of the many indictments
that tended to make the trial of
Reuf remarkable was the shooting of Assistant
District Attorney Francis J.
Heney by Morris Haas, an ex-convict
whose past record was exposed by the
prosecutor after Ffias had been accepted
as a member of the jury in Rfeuf's second
trial. Haas subsequently committed suicide
in the county jail.
The Bossless Governor: Charles Evans
Hughes, the hossless governor, has been
inaugurated for his second term as governor
of New York. In taking the oath
nf
uiuvc iie swore 10 sareguard the rights
of the people. In his address he appealed
to the 'legislature to pass laws for
forest preservation, improved waterways,
well-constructed highways and to foster
agriculture. He asked especially for
stringent laws for safeguarding The ballot.
He held a public reception after
his inaugural address.
Counterfeit Money: A counterfeit $5
silver certificate which made its appearance
in Philadelphia has just been discov
erea Dy me secret service bureau. It is
of the series of 1899 and bears the portrait
of an Indian chief. Possibly the
easiest way to identify the counterfeit
is by the fact that fhe shading under
the words "United States of America"
looks like a picket fence in very bad repair
instead of being regular in its formation.
Part of the note is lighter in
color than that of the genuine, while the
color of the back is a trifle darker green.
Some of the words are imperfectly formed,
the words "This certificate is receiv
aoie," etc., being very badly reproduced
according to the secret service authorities.
To 8top Gambling: The police department
and the I>aw and Order League
have joined hands in a crusade to prevent
society women from gambling. The
edit applies to cinch, whist and euchre
parties in which the trophies are cutglass
and chinaware, as well as to bridge
and poker parties, in which high monetary
stakes are the prizes. It Is declared
that private residences as well as
public halls will be raided If necessary.
