FROM THE PAPERS.
J. Pierpont Morgan has set a good example
to all the rich men In the world.
He once promised one hundred thousand
dollars to aid in rebuilding churches in

amount being secured from others. The
effort failed. When Mr. Morgan was told
the reasons for the failure he promptly
withdrew his condition. That was good.
A gift should be a gift, and not a club
to make others give.?The Westminster.
The Emmanuel Movement has been
called "Neo-Eddyism." Neither that nor
Eddyism are, as a matter of fact, original,
but are simply fresh adaptations
(and, in a measure, perversions) of various
theories that have been taught off
and on since men began to go about seeking
something new to tell or do. As for
Christian Science, what is true in it is
not new, and what is new is not true.
The Eniniamiol Movement mnv ho hocoJ
on a sounder and simpler tneology, but it
is in a large degree a mistaken quest,
and a questionable line of procedure.
Many a good minister is being spoiled
nowadays to make a poor doctor, and to
invent a lot of psychologic labels for old
ailments is not to produce a new therapeutics,
or really to advance the cause of
vital religion. "Shoemaker, stick to your
last!" would be timely advice to give to
some of these ministerial quacks who
are now usurping the functions of trained
meical men.?New York Observer.
The usefulness of tracts for evangelistic
work has been repeatedly demonstra
ted. A recent testimony to their efficacy
conies from Rev. Arthur J. Smith, superintendent
of the Evangelistic Committee
of New York City, who writes to the
American Tract Society in part as follows:
"Permit us to thank your most heartily
for your generous donation of tracts for
our use. These tracts have been widely
circulated in our tent meetings, open air
meetings, and meetings in shops and factories.
We consider this department of
our work one of the most important, next
to the preaching of the Gospel. The
tracts have enabled us to reach a larger
number of people than those who assemble
in the meetings proper, as the tracts
are taken by our workers in every direction,
and are given to men, women and
children on the highways as well as in
the homes."

Rev. Charles Brown, in his address
from the chair of a Non-conformist assembly,
referred in a very touching way
to his father and mother and Sunday
school teacher. He described them as
the lowly man and woman, now sleeping
in the God's acre of a Northamptonshire
village graveyard, who in a. laborer's cottage,
with everything against them,
brought up their children in an atmosphere
of genuine piety, and trained them
in the nurture and admonition of the
L<or<l; and to the enlightened and consecrated
Sunday school teacher whose
letters and prayers followed a wayward
lad till they brought him to the feet of
Christ and into His blessed and satisfying
service.
