Encouraging Business Outlook: Manufacturers
in Atlanta, Ga? report an encouraging
increase in business orders for
the month of January, with the outlook
for the year 1909 exceedingly bright.
They say the revival of trade expected
after the turn of the year has arrived, and
practically every factory of importance is
now running at full capacity. This optimistic
view of business conditions is
shared by manufactures in several lines,
including cotton and woolen textiles, foodstuffs,
clothing and stoves. These employ
a total of nearly 4,000 laboring people.

pointed a special committee to confer
with the anthracite operators regarding a
wage scale. The scale under which the
miners are now working was made by a
commission that grew out of a recommendation
made by President Rooseveli
some years ago and expires April 1. The
miners expect to meet with the anthracite
operators for a conference and attempt to
agree upon a new scale before the present
one expires. The appointment of the
special committee by the convention
places the three hundred thousand organized
miners of the anthracite and bituminous
fields behind the demands that
will be made of the operators.
