Story Corner
The Rev. Dr. Hiden, a Baptist minister
now in Lynchburg, is the authority foi
this story: Two ignorant preachers?;
Methodist anil a Bautist?were enzism
in a debate on baptism. The Methodis
asserted boldly, that "after all the fusi
that the Baptists has been a-makin
about immerse and immersion, thar ain
nary one o' them words to be, found ii
the leads of the Scripters, from Genesis
to Revelations." 'iue Baptist did no
know whether this was true or not; s<
when he came to reply, he arose witl
much dignity and said: "My hearers,
want you to notice the very remarkable
statement the brother just now made
He has the face to stand up here before
you, and tell you that the words immerse
and immersion ain't to be found in the
leads of the Scripters." And then paus
ing, as if in amazement at the temeritj
of his antagonist, but really because he
did not know what to say next* he re
peated the remark with redoubled em
phasis. This frightened the Methodist
who thought the Baptist was about te
turn to divers texts full of immerse an<
immersion; so he arose, and with batee
breath and all humility, explained: "
said, not as I knowed on."
One day Dr. Norman McLeod, who wai
a large and healthy man, and one of hit
burly elders went to pay a visit to i
certain Mrs. MacLaren of the congrega
tion, who lived in the Scotch Hills. Sh<
was a frugal woman, but determined tha
they should have the best in her house
So she piled the table with jellies and
jam and preserves and shortbread, am
they partook unsparingly. After the mea
the elder said to her: "Mrs. MacLaren
were you at the kirk on Sunday?" "Oh
aye," she said, "I was." "And what dit
you think of the treatment of tl^e mlra
cle?" (the sermon had been on the loaves
and fishes). "I thought it was good,'
said Mrs. MacLaren. "And what Is youi
idea on the subject, Mrs. MacLaren?"

Mrs. Ruth McEnery Stuart imitates negro
dialect delightfully, and her small son
has frequently boasted of it. The New
York Times tells the story that once when
his schoolmates were vaunting the accomplishments
of their several mothers
he was overheard to declare: "Well, my
mother is smarter than any of yours
She can speak two languages." "What
are they?" demanded his companions
