[E PRESBYTERIAN OF THE SOU'
BOUND FOR THE FIELD.
The good ship, Mongolia, leaving San
Francisco for the Orient, February 1G.
1909, carried some sixteen missionaries
bound for China, Japan and Korea.
Among those is the venerable Arch Deacon
Thomson, of Virginia, in his fiftieth
year of service as a missionary of the
Cross in the Protestant Episcopal work
in China. Although somewhat feeble in
health, as he is in his seventy-fifth year,
yet, after some time in America to recup
eraie, ne returns to liis work in China
with the enthusiasm almost of a boy,
because, as his wife, Mrs. Thomson, said
in conversation, ;'He would be heartbroken
if he could not return."
What a stimulus such a life is to
younger and stronger men in the ministry
today to do likewise, and give their
lives to the foreign field, when they
think of the millions yet. in darkness and
the awful need now for service. "The
harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers
are few; pray ye therefore the
Lord of the harvest that he would send
forth labourers into his harvest." Matt.
9: 57-58.
Arch Deacon Thomson is related to our
own work in China providentially. In
the early seventies he spoke at Columbia
Seminary while on furlough, and stated
that as a result of that visit Dr. DuBose,
of our mission in China, was led to that
great field. It will be remembered that
Mr. Wm. T. Ellis spoke of Dr. DuBose's
connection with the Anti-Opium l eague
of China, saying that the delivery of
millions of people from opium was surely
a sufficient monument to one modest missionary,
not to mention countless souls
who have heard that "God so loved the
world that He gave His only begotten
Son, that whosoever believelh in Him
should not perish, but have everlasting
life."
Among the missionaries are Rev. and
Mrs. Robt. T. Colt, on their way to Korea;
Miss Baskerville, who goes as a
trained nurse to Dr. James Woods' Hospital
in China; Mrs. J. V. Logan, of Danville,
Kv., who goes at her own expense
to work in Korea. The Mongolia is a
steady ship and the trip has been delightful.
The Hawaiian coast is in sight, and
the beautiful port of Honolulu is the. first
ston, where some twenty-four hours will
give time to visit the American
city. May the time soon come when not
only a few missionaries, but whole shiploads,
will leave America, carrying messages
of light to the people who sit in
the shadow of death. Our own Assembly
is calling for eight hundred of the
best of our young people, the pick nud
flower. "He that loveth father or mother
.more than me is not worthy of me; and
he that loveth son or daughter more than
me is not worthy of me. And he that
taketh not his cross and followeth after
me is not worthy of me. Ho that flndeth
his life shall lose it and he that loseth
his life for my sake shall find it." Matt.
10: 37-39. Who will answer our Savior's
command: "Go ye into all the world and
preach the Gospel to every creature."
"Here am I, Lord, send me." Isaiah 6: 8.
"Behold, now is the accepted time; behold,
now is the day of salvation." Corinthians
6:2.
