GOV. GLENN IN CHARLESTON, S. C.
Ex-Gov. R. B. Glenn, representing the
Assembly's Home Mission Committee,
one evening of this week, addressed a
large congregation in the First Church,
Charleston.
Dr. Sprunt, an old friend and college
mate, made a beautiful little speech of
introduction.
While showing his deep interest in Foreign
Missions, in using the text, "Go ye
into all the world," etc., yet the governor
made a telling speech in the Interest
of Home Missions. He enumerated
the many and terrible evils, and in
graphic description showed how the nation,
as well as the church, is imperiled
by &e desecration of the Sabhath,
by the whiskey traffic, the ignorance
and want of the gospel in our moun
tain districts, the hordes of immigrants
of the worst type and the slums of all our
cities. He gave statistics showing that
millions were spent last year for unnecessary
and evil things, and in comparison
the small amount for the spread of the
gospel and the salvation of man, at home
and abroad.
It was an impassioned appeal with soul
and body, such as is rarely heard from
any source, and, perhaps, never from any
other man who has occupied such a high
position in public life.
There was given in cash and pledges
$750 and cards taken that will swell this
amount. In his short canvass, so far, he
has secured the following amounts. In
Georgia: Macon, $274.55; Athens, $492;
TTnir,., t>nln? Amrnota ?1 00.4. Co.

vannali, $1,162.48. In Florida: Jacksonville,
$1,500. The following were present
in Charleston, and took part in the service,
by request of the pastor: Dr. Fraser,
of the Second Church; Rev. S. C.
Caldwell, chairman Presbytery's Home
Mission Committee; Rev. T. D. Johnston,
pastor at Summerville, and the writer.
After a brief rest at his home in North
Carolina, the governor will canvass Tennessee,
Arkansas, and then for nearly a
month, in Texas.
It was touching when, after the service,
a few brethren were soated with
him in Dr. Sprunt's home,, greatly exhausted,
he begged that prayer be mode
in his'behalf.
Surely the church will respond in this
respect, as well as in offerings for our
Homo Mission work.
