"A Guide to the Study of Church History,"
by W. .). MeGlothlin, l*h. D
(Berlin), D. D., professor of Church
History in the Southern Baptist Theological
Seminary, Louisville, Ky.; 12
mo., pp. iv, 264. Louisville, Ky.; Baptist
World Publishing Co., 1!>08.
This volume is intended to be a guide
to students, rather than an exhaustive
treatise on church history. Words are
abbreviated, sentences condensed, and
every jxjssible verbal and mechanical <! >
vice used to enable the author to pack
into his work as much material as possible,
and to present it in such, a way
as to make it impressive and easily remembered.
Book I, of the four into
which the work is divided, is devoted
largely to definitions, among which the
author pronounces the members of the
church to be /'baptized believers, walking
orderly," and one of the two ordinances
to be "baptism?immersion (possibly
trine) of a believer in water." The
Baptist coloring tinges the work
throughout, very naturally. At the same

of history and with reference to the
practices of the Anabaptists, the beginnings
of modern immersionisin, the practice
of open communion, and other mactors
upon which candor is sometimes
wanting on the part of some writers
and controversialists, he is straightforward
and impartial. His account of
the se-baptism of John Smith and the
to-each-other administered baptism of
Roger Williams and Hollimon makes us
wonder what those Baptists must think
who hold that to he regular a church
must be able to trace its ordination back
to the Apostles.
"Famous Stories of Sam P. Jones,"
edited by George R. Stuart, sixteen
years his do-worker and associate; published
by Fleming H. Revell.
This is a volume of exceedingly apt
and striking incidents and illustrations
used by the well known evangelist in
his signal ministry. They are characterized
by a degree of tenderness and
appropriateness which did not always appear
in the evangelist's spoken discourses.

"The Westminster New Testament: the
Gospel of Mark," by Rev. S. W. Green;
published by Revell.
This is one of a series of ten volumes
on the New Testament Wo aro ??t-?
the preface that the standpoint adopted
is "that of modern critical scholarship."
The series is said to be intended for
"teachers, lay preachers and others engaged
in Christian work." The attitude
of the author is that of charitable concession
to the ignorance of the inspired
writers and the crudeness of religious
concept ion then prevailing. What a pity
'tis that the apostles and evangelists
should not have shared the over-much
learning of the modern critic!
The supreme test of trust is willingness
to wait God's time.

The John C. Winston Company has
began the preparation of an entirely new
edition of the Bible, which will have
some novel features. The statement has
been made that one text out of every
nine in the Scriptures refers to blessings
promised to the righteous by the
word of God. This new edition, therefore,
will be unique, in that every text
promising or referring to the temporal
blessings in store for the Christian is
suitably marked in red, in the same way
that another of the Winston Bibles?that
bearing the name of the "Christian
Workers"?has every passage 011 the
theme of salvation emphasized. The
marking is the work of J. Gilchrist Lawson,
the Tennessee evangelist, who ha3

The Lippincotts have ready, Eben E.
Rexford's new book on "The Home Garden,"
announced some time ago. This
handsomely illustrated volume will not
be a treatise on scientific gardening, bur
a helpful handbook for the owner of a
little piece of land ambitious to utilize
it to the best advantage. From it he
will learn the best way to go about
the growing of vegetables and small
fruits and how to combine pleasure with
profit in the process.
The Buttons issue a little volume
entitled "The Life of Our Lord." Its author,
John F. Lewis, fias formed ids book.
as he explains, "by interweaving the records
contained in the Four Gospels, placing
them as nearly as possible in chronological
order." The book thus gives
a complete and consecutive "Life of
Christ" in the language of the Gospels.
A book designed "for the worker in
the pulpit" is published by the Macmillan
Company, bearing the title, "The
Preacher, His Person, Messages and
Method." In this book the author. Prof.
Arthur Hoyt, of the Auburn Theological
Seminary, completes his exhaustive study
of the whole field of modern preaching
begun in "The Work of Moderu
Preaching."
