20 THE Presbyteries CHARLESTON PRESBYTERY. Presbytery met at John's Island, Wadnialaw church, April 13, 1909. Rev. fjamuel M. Smith, D. D., preached the opening sermon, at the request of the moderator, John S. Verner, on Acts 1: 8. Rev. ,1. L. McLees was elected moderator and Rev. T. D. Johnson, clerk. A Call from Aiken church for Rev. T. D. Johnson was accepted by him and tne pastoral relation between him and the Summerville church was dissolved. Dissolution: The pastoral relation between Rev. F. A. Drennan and Walterboro and Corinth churches was dissolved and a certificate of dismission was given Mr. Drennan to Bethel Presbytery. Overture: Presbytery voted to adopt the change in the Constitution on "Complaints," and "No" on the question of changing Chapter 10, section 3, of the Confession of Faith. Commissioners: Rev. Henry Alexander White, D. D., and Hon. D. S. Henderson, principals; Rev. S. C. Caldwell and J. W. Robson, alternates. Organization: Presbytery granted a petition for the organization of a church at Rockville. Calvin Celebration: Highly instructive addresses on the Calvin Quadricentennial were heard. Rev. W. T. Hall, D. D., spoke or "Calvin as a Theologian." Hon. D. S. Henderson on "Calvin's Contribution to Educational Progress," Rev. S. M. Smith, D. D., on "Calvin's Influence ct| Civil Government," and Rev. Henry Alexander White, D. D., on "Calvin and His Times." Sfated Clerk. ARKANSAS PRESBYTERY. Arkansas Presbytery convened at Searcy. Tuesday. April 20. at 8 p. m.. and was opened with a sermon by the moderator, Rev. J. \V. Cobb, front Mark 16: 15. Present: Twelve ministers and thirteen elders. Organization: Rev. J. G. Lane, moderator, C. F. Bizzell, temporary clerk, and R. W. Porter, reading elerk. Received: Rev. A. M. MacLaughlin, front Ft. Worth Presbytery, ard arranged for his installation over the Conway church, dnd Rev. H. H. Patrick, from Palmyra Presbytery, and arranged for hi3 installation over (he Blytheville church. Dismissed: Rev. J. S. Edenburn, to the Presbytery of Abilene, 11. S. A.; Rev. P. H. Hensley. Assembly's Overtures: Presbytery advises and consents to the changes recommended in Rook of Church Order, Chapter 13, section 4. and answers we desire a change In the "Elect Infant Clause." The Home Mission Committee presented what was considered the best report in the history of the Presbytery; other reports showed forward movement along every line of work. Interesting y PRESBYTERIAN OF THE SOU! sermons were preached and Rev. Chas. Morris delivered a splendid address on "John Calvin as a Theologian.'' Next Meeting at Conway. The hospitality of the good people of Searcy was abounding and this was a delightful meeting. R. H. Latham, S. C. PRESBYTERY OF CENTRAL TEXAS. Presbytery met at Austin, April 15, and by request of the moderator, Rev. S. A. King, D. D., the opening sermon was preached by Rev. A. F. Cunningham, on the subject of "Creeds,"' text, Mark 9:24. There were present in all twenty-two ministers and eighteen ruling elders. Officers: Rev. J. E. Green, moderator, Rev. J. L. Rowling and Elder J. W. Butler, of Clitton, clerks. Rev. M. C. Hutton was re-elected stated clerk-treasurer for three years. Corresponding Members: Rev. J. E. Wylfe, of Washbourn Presbytery, Rev. C. W. Hollis, of Chesapeake, Rev. J. D. McLean, of Paris, Rev. T. R. Sampson, of Dallas, Rev. S. E. Chandler, of Western Texas. Rev. C. F. Hancock, of Meridian. Rev. W. A. Gillon, of Brownwood, Rev. E. B. Wright and Bishop, of Austin, U. S. A. Candidates: There were reported ten candidates fcr the ministry under the jurisdiction of Presbytery. Received: Rev. C. W. Hollis from Chesapeake Presbytery. Commissioners: Dr. S. A. King, of Austin Theological Seminary, and Rev. Edward Bailey, of Mansfield, Elders A. N. W. Smith, of Georgetown, and T. W. Gregory, of Austin, principals; Rev. E. E. Bigger, of Mexia, Rev. C. T. Caldwell, D. D? of Waco, elders; R. L. Bewley, of McGregor, and J. W. Butler, of Clifton, alternates. Missions: The Presbytery had quite a treat in an able and timelv address from ex-Governor Glenn, of North Carolina. The church was packed with deeply interested hearers. He spoke on missions. $620 was collected in cash and subscriptions. Calvin Celebration:. Dr. S. A. King spoke on "The Five Points of Calvinism," and Dr. D. N. McLaughlin on "Calvin, the Man and His Times." Both addresses were tine, and highly appreciated. Dr. McLauchlin has been asked to present this address as the Presbyterial sermon at the fall meeting of the Presbytery. Forward Movement: Rev. F. A. Brown addressed the Presbytery on this subject. Daniel Baker College: Rev. W. A. GilIon and Rev. S. E. Chandler presented the urgent claims,of this institution. The property of this college is valued at $62,000; and a dormitory to cost $8,000 is the imperative need of it to make it self-sustaining. McGregor?This plucky little church of less than twenty members had a ~ommisFlon sent them last September to ascertain the condition of the church. Under the efficient work of the chairman. Rev. Eugene C. Caldwell, the church is wonderfully alive. They will soon have a handsome $7,500 building completed. $4.500 of this is furnished by the members CH. May 5, 1909. of the church and the citizens of McGregor. Overtures: In the matter of the "Infant clause," the Presbytery answered "Yes"; and overtures the Assembly to appoint an ud interim committee to consider the subject and propose a change Chat will not in any wise affect the doctrine in question, in the event that a majority of the Presbyteries desire a change. As 10 the amendment of the Hook of Church Order, the following action was taken: Presbytery declines to adopt the proposed change. The Assembly is overLured to strike out the words "in whole or in part," in Chap. XIII. Sec. 3, Par. F. Also to strike out the words "any port'on or the whole of," in Chap. XIII. Sec. 4, Par. 4. Next Meeting: Clifton was selected as the place of the fall meeting. An adjourned meeting was ordered to be held in Temple in June. Austin Theological Seminary: A most cordial invitation was extended to the Presbytery to attend a reception at this beloved institution, which was accepted by a rising vote; and was greatly eiv joyed by all who could attend. After a hearty vote of thanks for the abounding hospitality extended the members of the Presbytery, the Rresbytery adjourned to meet in Temple, at the call of the moderator. M. C. Hutton, S. C. CHESAPEAKE PRESBYTERY. Chesapeake Presbytery met on April 13 at 8 p. m., in the Second church, Alexandria, Va. There were present fourteen ministers and eleven elders. Officers.?Rev. Thos. W. Hooper Jr., moderator, and Elders C. J. Janney and w. t<j. Miner, cierKs. Received.?Rev. H. M. Moffett, from Lexington Presbytery. Changes in Book of Church Order and Confession of Faith.?Presbytery voted aye on both the recommendation as to the voting on complaints and the question of its desire for some change in the "Elect Infant Clause." Rev. L. L. Knight was divested without censure of the office of minister; at. his own request, the reason being that he felt no longer called to the ministry. Foreign Missions.?The churches gave $1,000 more this year than last, an average of $2.o5 per member, and four gave more i.ian the $4 standard. ..Overtures to the Assembly.? (1) Infant Salvation.?That Chap. X, Sec. 3, be changed to "All Infants dying iu miancy, ana also all otner persons who are Incapable of being outwardlycalled by the ministry of the Word, are redeemed by the atonement of Christ, and are regenerated and saved through the Holy Spirit who worketh when, and where, and how he pleaseth." (2) Polygamy.?'that an ad interim committee of not less than five members be appointed to consider the status of polygamists in heathen lands applying for communion with the church; to thoroughly Investigate existing condi lions, and to report the facts to the next 'following General Assembly of this Church.
