Rev. J. H. Gruver, who is under appointment
as a missionary to Korea, is
at present visiting churches in South
Carolina as the representative of our
Assembly's Foreign Mission Committee
in the interest of the Forward
Movement. He will be in Harmony
Presbytery in June. Any church in
our bounds desiring a visit from him
will please notify me at once.

Martindale, giving an illustrated address
ou "The World Lit Up by Christ." Our
Sabbath school sent several delegates to
the State Sunday School Convention,
June 1-3, in Nashville, at which Mr. Martindale
was re-elected to the important
position of teacher training superintendent
of the Tennessee Sunday School Association,
a work to which he has giveu
much thought.
Clarksville: There has been unusual
interest and enthusiasm in connection
with the commencement exercises of the
Southwestern Presbyterian University.
The people of the town have attended
in larger numbers than for many years,
and a number of prominent, ladies gave
a charming lawn reception to the whole
university. The usual class night exercises
on Friday night, June 4, were followed
on Saturday night by the annual
address before the literary societies by
Col Bennett H. Young, of Louisville, Ky.
Sunday' morning the baccalaureate sermon
was preached by Dr. J. J. Chisholm,
of Natchez, Miss., and the sermon before
the Y. M. C. A. Sunday night by
Rev. E. D. Patton, of Acworth, Ga. The
inter-society medal was won m tiia oratorical
contest Monday night by Mr. W.
M. Rogers, of Mississippi. The Alumni
Association held a very promising meeting,
at "/hich definite action was tak^n
looking toward increasing the endowment.,
and the matter was placed in
the hands of a competent committee.
Tuesday night the closing exercises were
held. The Bachelor of Arts degree was
conferred on eight students, the Master
of Arts on three and the Bachelor of DI
vinny on one, Air. m. a. i nomas, or Alabama.
The degree of rjoctor of Divinity
was conferred upon Rev. C. R. NiSbet,
of Nashville, Tenn., and Rev. J. K.
Smith, of Shreveport, La. Prof. William
Dinwiddle, professor of mathematics, was
elected chancellor and Dr. G. F. Nicolassen,
vice chancellor.

PRESBYTERIAN OF THE SOUT1
Lenoir City: The pastor, Rev. D. M.
Stockard, was recently assisted in a
meeting by Rev. J. E. Robinson. Two
members were received into the membership.
The church was groat ly
strengthened and much good accomplished
by the clear presentation of the
gospel. '
TEXAS.
Coahoma: Sunday, June 6, was a great
day with this church. The new house
of worship was dedicated. Rev. W. I*.
Downing preached an able sermon from
the text, "I will glorify the house of my
God." The pastor, Rev. O. G. Jones, propounded
the questions and received the
promises of the officers and congregation.
Dr. A. B Luck was ordained and
installed a ruling elder. At night two
members were received into the communion.
On the third Sabbath children's
day will be observed.
Central Church, Beaumont: This
church will be supplied during the next
month by Itev. H. C. Arthur, of New
Orleans, La.
VIRGINIA.
Staunton: Rev. W. N. Scott, D. D., on
June 6, celebrated his eight anniversary
as pastor of the Second church.
Lexington: On Sunday, June 6, Rev.
James E. Booker, superintendent of home
missions for the Synod of Virginia, de

congregation. He illustrated his address
with a large map of the Synod of Virginia,
and pointed out a surprising lack
of church services and church communicants
of any denomination in some counties
of this State and West Virginia.
Clifton Forge: On Sunday May 30, the
handsome new house of worship was dedicate^.
This makes the third chuiich
built on the same ground and the dedication
in which Rev. E. W. McCorkle,
D. D., now of Kentucky has assisted. Rev.
G. B. Strickler, of Union Seminary,
preached the sermon, and Rev. Messrs.
E. W. McCorkle, J. E. Cook, of Baltimore,
Thomas Mowbray, of Fincastle, N.
A. Parker, of Iron Gate, L H. Paul, the
pastor, assisted in the exercises.
Floyd Court House: On the first Sabbath
of June, Rev. Arthur Robotham, of
Roanoke, visited this, church by appointment
of Presbytery and remained eight
days. The congregations were large, and
very attentive and much good has been
done by the earnest preaching.
Winchester Presbytery: The adjourned
meeting of Winchester Presbytery, was
held on Tuesday night and Wednesday,
June S and 0, at Martinsburg, W. Va.
The meeting was presided over by Rev.
J. F. Leeper, of Piedmont, and Rev. C. D.
Gilkeson, of Moorefield, was temporary
clerk. Rev. A. G. Link, of Strasburg, Va.,
stated clerk. There were eighteen present.
The business of the meeting was
the examination of Rev. Dr. J. T.
McHrlde, of Falling Waters Church and
Rev. E. B. Druen, of the Springfield
Church, both of whom have recently como

Grover, who was examined for ordination
and who is to take charge of the church
at Parsons. In each case the examinations
were unanimously approved as satisfactory.

?Mr. J. Harry Tyler, of Baltimore,
spoke recently in the Presbyterian committee
of publication rooms before the
ministerial union on the laymen's missionary
movement. The attendance watlarge
and enthusiastic, including ministers
from all the denominations in the '
city. Mr. Tyler is arranging for a conference
in this city in November, and
the ministers agreed to co-operate very
heaitily with the laymen in their work.
Montgomery Presbytery: An adjourned
meeting of the Presbytery of Montgomery
was held in the First Church, Dynchburg,
on Tuesday, June 8, at 4 p. ru.
Mr. Clarence Clark, a member of the
First Church, Roanoke, was taken under
care of the Presbytery as a candidate
for the ministry. He will pursue
his studies at Roanoke College, Salem.
Mr. L. McC. Williams, recently graduated
from Union Theological Seminary,
Richmond, was received as a candidate
from Norfolk Presbytery, and licensed
as a probationer. He will supply the
churches of Buchanan and High Bridge,
from which he has received calls, and
will apply for ordination at the stated
fall meeting of Presbytery. A petition
signed by sixty-three members of the
Presbyterian church was received, asking
for the organization of a church in the
West End of Roanoke, and Presbytery
appointed the following commission to
visit the field and organize a church, if
the way seems clear: Rev. J. A. MeMurray,
Rev. L?. W. Irwin, Rev. E. E.
l^ane and Ruling Elders William Johnston
and B. W. Logan, of the Salem church.
Presbytery then adjourned to meet at
Princeton, W. Va., in staled session, on
Tuesday, September 14. 1909, at 8 p. m.

held on Sunday, June 6, the following
additional officers were elected: Ruling

Bethesda: The Rev. Henry Miller has
been holding a series of meetings at
Franklin, in Pendleton county. He returned
the latter part, of last week, and
on Sabbath the lord's supper was administered
at Bethesda; tjie first service
held in the new church building,
which is about completed.
