GOOD AND CHEAP OUTSIDE PAINT.
An excellent substitute for white oil
paint may be made as follows: Four
quarts of skim milk, one pound of fresh
slacked lime, twelve ounces of linseed
oil, four ounces of wmte Burgundy pitch,
six ounces of Spanish whiting, to be
llli ?? fallnura*
Put the lime into a wooden bucket
or keg and mix it in about one quart
of milk; the oil, in which the pitch must
be previously dissolved over a slow fire
and cooled, to be added, a little at a
time, then the rest of the miix, and af
terwards the Spanish whiting. Mix thoroughly
and strain through a common
wire milk strainer, and it will be ready
for use.
This quantity is sufficient for more
than fifty square yards, two coats. By
adding a very small quantity of lampblack,
first dissolved in milk and thoroughly
mixed, a very handsome lead
color can be obtained. If stone color is
desired, after mixing in the lampblack
add a small quantity of yellow ochre and
Venetian red separately, first dissolved in
milk. While using, stir frequently to
keep it in solution.
Then deem it not an idle thing

The flesh of guineas is generally dark
colored, tender, juicy and in flavor equal
to the ring-neck English pheasant. Many
think it more palatable, for the flavor
is not so pronounced, and there is considerable
more of it. The flesh of the
white guineas is light in color, and if
they are crossed with the pearl variety,
the meat of the latter will become nearly
as light.
A comparison of corn and oats as feed
for weak horses was made at the Oh.o
station, and the results indicate that
when clover and timothy hay mixed are
fed to mature geldings at general farm
work, ear-corn is practically as efficient,
pound for pound, as oats. The corn
did not induce laziness, nor did the oats
induce increased spirit and endurance.
The amount of milk may be increased
and an unprofitable animal may be made
profitable by careful feeding, but no
food, or no amount of food, will increase
the per cent of fat in the milk above
what a cow will normally give.
The hen gathers, mixes and puts together
in organic form 650 grains of
water, 120 grains of fat, 103 grains of
lime, 80 grains of albumen, 26 grains of
sugar and ten grains of ash. With her
marvelous inside fixtures she puts her
humble grist together and shells out
the most miraculous of animal products
?the egg.
Salt and common tobacco leaves and
stems will, it is claimed, keep sheep
from having stomach worms.

POINTS ON DIET.
Dinner should be of a lighter nature
in summer than winter.
A quart of wheat contains more nutriment
than a bushel of cucumbers.
There is a happy mean between eating

The following method does away with
fishy dishes, disagreeable odors, etfc.:
Ciean and wash the fish thoroughly, salt,.
pepper, and flour it inside and out (sparingly),
then roll In manila paper at least
three times. Pinch the ends of the paper
together, then fold back, and pin securely,
to prevent the escape of the juices.

SOUTH AFRICAN APPLES.
Apples from South Africa are being
sold by the Italian fruit sellers on the
streets of Richmond. The apple is a
large one, almost in appearance like a
Johnson's Fine Winter, but a deeper color.
The apples are bought in boxes of
ninety-six apples, which cost the retailers
$3.25, and they are retailed at five cents
each. The apple is a fine flavored, sweet,
juicy one, with flesh much of the character
of the Winesap in firmness. It is
packed well and attractively, is uniform
in size, and sells readily. This beats
Oregon competition with our fruit.?

HIS MO.HER'S PRAYERS.
A great man relates how on one occasion
he suddenly opened the door of his
mother's room, and saw her on her knees
beside her chair, and heard her speak
his own name in prayer. He quietly
withdrew with a feeling of awe and reverence
in his heart. Soon he went away
irom home to school, then to college, then
into life's sterner duties. But he never
forgot that one glimpse of his mother at
prayer, nor the one word?his own name
?which he had heard her utter. He well
knew that what he had seen that day
was but a glimpse of what was going oh
every day in that secret closet of prayer,
and the consciousness strengthened him
a thousand times in duty, in danger and
in struggle. And when at last death came
and sealed those lips, the sorest sense
of loss he felt was Ue knowledge that
no more would his mother be praying
for him.
