Edward Everett Hale, who found faith
in a Divine -Saviour, in a prayer meeting
in Rochester. Mr. Speer's argument for
the true and eternal deity of our Ijorn
is based; (1) Ou His character, including
his supernatural claims, attested by His
own consciousness, and the universality
of His character, the perfect balance, and
sinlessness; (2) On His teaching regarding
God, about man, and His ethical
teaching; (3) The things which he did
on earth; His influence on the character |

The interest in Bible class work, and
especially in the organized Bible class,
is so great and wide-spread that the
Presbyterian Roard of Publication, Philadelphia,
on October 1, will begin the publication
of an "Adult Bible Class
Monthly" for teachers and members of
Bible classes in the churches.
"Jesus and the Gospel, Christianity
Justified in the Mind of Christ." is by
James Denny, D. D., professor of New
Testament Language, Literature, and
Theology, at United Free Church College,
Glasgow; published in New York by A. C.
Armstrong & Son. This strong book is
really a study of Christ's witness to himself.
His revelation is but one aspect
of this witness, viz., his consciousness
of his relation to God and man. The
author's plea is that men may take Christ
at Christ's own estimate. The book has
for its object an answer to two important
questions. First, "Is it the case that
from the very beginning Christianity has
existed only in the form of a faith, which
has Christ for its object, and not at
all in the form of a faith, which has had
Christ simply as its living pattern?'
Secondly, "Can the Christian religion, as
the New Testament exhibits it. justify itself
by appeal to Jesus? Is the mind of
Christians about Christ supported by the
mind of Christ about himself?" The opportunity
given the author in his discussion
to exaggerate the plea, "Back to
Christ," and to appeal to him sometimes
even against the earliest form which
Christianity assumed, was a large and
open one. In reading the book we wonder
that he held himself so closely to
his theme and purpose. The intellee
t.ual aspects, too, of the problem are of
a nature to turn the mind.in the direc
tion of mere mental inquiry. Dr. Dennv
has avoided the occasion to overdo any
of these things. He has held tenaciously
to the great central truths of the Gospel.
The divinity and atonement o'
Christ are constantly emphasized. The
supernatural character of his gospel an 1
of himself is maintained as against any
naturalization or rationalistic explanation
or interpretation.
