JAMES ESTELL IRVINE.
Mr. James Estell Irvine, the subject of
this sketch, was born in Augusta County,
Va., October 23, 1830. He came of ScotchIrish
ancestry, who settled in the Valley
of Virginia in colonial days, and In his
character illustrated the noble traits belonging
to this sturdy people. His early
life was spent in a Christian home of the
olden type, and it was under such sacred
innuences that he received his earliest
religious impressions. When grown to
manhood he went into business in
Waynesboro, where May 5, 1853, he was
married 10 Miss Hannah MofTett King,
who preceded him to the grave, April 22,
1902. Rarely, if ever, were two lives
more happily united. They were blessed
with a family of nine children, seven
of whom are still living. In addition
to this large family of his own to care
for and train, his house became a home
for orphaned relatives whom he and his
godly wife took under their care to rear
and educate.
When the Civil war broke out he left ,
his young wife and children, and joined
the First Virginia Calvary, Company E,
under Maj. J. E. B. Stuart, and served
with courage and faithfulness through
the war. After the bitter struggle was

up his duties on the farm, where he
trained his own children and those whom
he virtually adopted in the strict religious
practices under which he himself had,
grown up. For a number of years he
was a ruling elder in Union Church, and
afterwards became a member of the Tinkling
Spring Church, into whose bounds
his family had moved. After a lingering
illness. March 27, 1909, he was called to
his rest to join his happy help-meet who
had gone before him.
Mr. Irvine was a man of unusual Christian
character. What he was. was the
logical product of the influences under
which his early life was spent. Being
himself a child of the covenant, he grew
up in the Church, and never ceased to
press upon his children and grandchild
dren their own covenant relation to God/
He believed with all his heart in the
benefits and privileges of that covenant,
and confidently expected its blessings to
descend to those whom he loved, as they
had come down to him; and he was not
. disappointed.
His house was a house of prayer He
gathered daily his family together fo^
family worship, and steadfastly refused
to let pressing secular affairs encroach
upon it. He was a diligent student of
the Bible, and in his more active days
always found opportunity to teach it to
1 others. One of his comrades in war once
remarked of him that nothing would ovor
keep him from reading daily God's Word,
no matter how busy they might be lu
camp. Such systematic habits of devotion
brought forth their natural fruit in
the course of his long life in a rich
Christian experience and mature character.
He loved the public worship bf
his church, which he regularly attended
and generously supported. He bore tho'
