THE FARM WELL.
The well is a necessity 011 many farms,
but it may be a very serious menace to
health unless it is properly protected. A
great deal of typhoid fever is spread by
water, and much of it by well-water. As
water at a resonable distnee below the
surface, is seldom contaminated except
through the mouths of wells, the chief
duty of the farmer is to prevent seepage
into the well from its mouth and
from the surrounding soil.
The precautions for a sanitary farmwell
are comparatively few and inexpensive.
The location of the well is a
matter of prime importance; it should
always be situated above the level of
the surrounding ground, and so placed
Ihnt ? 4 ?

waste into it. Furthermore, the well
should be walled up with brick or stone,
laid in cement, and with the wall projecting
about two feet above the level of
the ground. The top of the well should
be made water-proof, to prevent any
contamination from the surface. In addition,
the wise farmer will gain much
if he will lay concrete from the edge of
the wall for several feet around the well.
This will practically prevent any drippings
into the well from the surrounding
soil. A pump, fitting closely into the
well, is preferable to a chain and bucket,
as the latter may become filthy^from
contact with the hands. Where stock is
watered at the well, a pipe or waterproof
trough should be run for them
some distance from the well, inasmuch
as aniamls should not be allowed to stand
about the well. Cleanliness in the surroundings
of the well is of the very first
importance.
GOLD OR IRON.
' Gold is the most valuable of all metals,"
you declare. Are you sure? Gold,
it is true, is the most precious of the
metals and the highest-priced; tut if we
are to estimate the value of a thing on
the basis of its usefulness, then gold
would not be by any means the most valuable
of our mineral products. We ere
told that
Iron vessels cross the ocean;
Iron engines give them motion;
Iron pipes our gas deliver;
Iron bridges span our rivers;
Iron stoves for cooking victuals;
Iron ovens, pots and kettles;
Iron horses draw our loads;
Iron rails compose our roads;
Iron anchors hold in sands;
Iron rods, and bolts, and bands;
Iron houses, Iron walls;
Iron cannon, iron balls;
Iron axes, knives and chains;
Iron augers, saws and planes;
Iron globules in our blood,
Iron particles in food;
Iron lightning rods on spires;
Iron telegraphic wires;
If you were to try now to name half as

could not do It. We could do without
gold, for silver and copper could take its
place to a considerable extent. But
what could we do without iron??Sel.
