PRESBYTERIAN OF THE SOUTF
The Library
FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH,
Staunton, Va.
A volume which is of much interest
and pleasure now on our table is "The
First Presbyterian Church, Staunton,
Va." Material gathered and arranged
by Arista Hoge and published by the
Caldwell-Sitee Company, Staunton. It is
historical, niographical and memorial,
and is eminently worthy of the strong
and fruitful Church, whose life and usefulness
are here recorded.
In April, 1897, the Presbyterians of
Staunton and Augusta County celebrated
the 250th anniversary of the Westminster
Assembly, which gave the Presbyterian
Churches of the world their great standards,
the Confession of Faith and the
l.arger and Shorter Catechisms. All of
the rich and impressive exercises of
their successful celebration are here
preserved with the addresses of Dr. T.
C. Johnson, Dr. Whaling, Hon. J. A. Waddell,
Dr. Finley, "Dr. Beattie and Dr.
Cock, with the sermons of Dr. Fraser,
the pastor, and a poem read by the Rev.
R. A. Lapssley.
In October. 1904, the Centennial of
this Church Was also celebrated with historical
papers by Messrs. Waddell, Finley,
Rolson, Scott and Druen, and sermons
by the Rev. Wm. E. Baker, a former
pastor, Dr. J. W. Rosebro, and Dr.
W. W. Moore.
With the history of the Church are
sketches of the pastors, including James
Waddell, the blind preacher, Dr. Joseph
Smith, Dr. Joseph R. Wilson, Dr. B. M.
Smith, Dr. Wm. E. Baker, Dr. D. K. McFarland,
Dr. J. P. Strider, Dr. D. W.
Shanks, and Dr. A. M. Fraser, the present
efficient and beloved minister of this
Church. There is a well merited tribute
to Miss Mary Julia Baldwin, the
founder and builder of the Mary Baldwin
Female Seminary. An account is given
ui lue uiemoas 01 nnaace wnicn nave
been used in this Church with much success
and satisfaction. The editor of the
volume, Mr. Arista Hose, has been the
modest and most efficient treasurer for
many years. The work is of lasting historical
value. It will have esDecial in
terest to the people of Staunton, and
their scattered sons and daughters. It
can be obtained from Mr. C. R. Caldwell,
Caldwell-Sites Company, Staunton, Va.,
$2.50 postpaid. An edition de luxe has
also been prepared for $5.00 postpaid.
The portraits are of much attraction, and
a fairer frontispiece oould not be found
than the excellent picture of Mrs. Wm. E.
Baker, now of Roswell, Georgia. Two
things are wanting, a picture of Dr.
Pra8er, and an index. J. P. 8.
There is nothing that shows the awfulness
of sin as doee being saved by infln
ite grace.
The choir loft or stall should be a second
pulpit In the church and the choir a
second preacher.
